UDO SCHINDLER & KATHARINA WEBER / Spielzeit Atemzeit Horizontzeit (Unit Records)

Un bon duo anches et piano, avec Udo Schindler alternant entre saxo soprano et carinette basse/contrebasse et Katharina Weber au piano. Sens du dramatique (“an- und ausreisstöne sprechversuche”), moments de gaieté, et Schindler varie les approches, poussant parfois de retentissants couacs contrôlés.

A good reeds & piano duo, with Udo Schindler switching back and forth between soprano sax and bass/contrabass clarinet, and Katharina Weber at the piano. A firm sense of drama (“an- und ausreisstöne sprechversuche”), playful moments, and Schindler varies his approaches, producing resounding controlled honks at times.

BÄNZ OESTER & THE RAINMAKERS / Playing at the Bird’s Eye (Unit Records)

Un quartet du contrebassiste Bänz Oester, avec Afrika Mkhize au piano, Ganesh Geymeier au saxo ténor et Ayanda Sikade à la batterie. Ce groupe interprète des compos d’Oester et de Mkhadi, ainsi que des airs traditionnels européens arrangés par le bassiste. Les pièces sont longues, ancrées dans un jazz qui n’hésite pas à dissoner, souvent riche en surprises. “Wie di graue Näbel schlyche” (un traditionnel) et “Be Still” de Mkhize brassent agréablement, et Geymeier pousse de poignantes tirades ici et là.

A quartet led by Swiss bassist Bänz Oester, with Afrika Mkhize at the piano, Ganesh Geymeier on tenor sax, and Ayanda Sikade on drums. The band performs compositions by Oester and Mkhadi, along with traditional tunes rearranged by the abssist. Tracks are long, anchored in a jazz that doesn’t hesitate to disharmonize and packs lots of surprises. “Wie di graue Näbel schlyche” (a traditional tune) and Mkhize’s “Be Still” are nicely raucous, and Geymeier plays some gripping tirades here and there.

Amateurs de musique traditionnelle irlandaise, ouvrez vos oreilles. Voici le splendide premier album de The Gloaming. Chant, guitare, piano, violon et violon Hardanger. Quelques chansons originales (dont “Song 4” sur un poème de Domhnall Mac Cárthaigh, un moment fort), mais surtout des airs et chansons traditionnels. Iarla Ó Lionáird a la voix douce, mélancolique, suave, et les arrangements font preuve de retenue et de grâce. Un tantinet trop langoureux ici et là. Et surtout des chansons d’amour et de déception. Cela dit, il y a quelques reels, réunis en un medley endiablé de 16 minutes. Une production irréprochable.

Fans of traditional Irish music, pay attention. This is the gorgeous debut CD by The Gloaming. Vocals, guitar, piano, violin, and Hardanger violin. Some original songs (“Song 4” on a poem by Domhnall Mac Cárthaigh is a highlight), but mostly traditional songs and tunes. Iarla Ó Lionáird has a soft, suave, melancholic voice, and the arrangements are mostly restrained and graceful. Perhaps a bit too sugary here and there. And it’s mostly songs about love and deception. There are a few reels though, but they are all packed in a 16-minute medley. Top quality production.
