(2006) et Zwei (2010). Dans tous les cas, il
s’agit d’un duo de contrebasses qui explore une forme d’improvisation libre
fortement axée sur les sons bruts et l’utilisation de l’instrument comme caisse
résonante. Effets percussifs à profusion, grattements, foisonnement d’idées.
J’ai l’impression que Daniel Studer et Peter Fry ne s’écoutent pas aussi
attentivement que sur Zwei, mais
c’est une bonne prestation.
Recorded live, Zwim is the follow up to Zweierlei (2006) and Zwei
(2010). In all cases, Studer-Fry is a duo of
doublebassists exploring a form of free improvisation strongly focused on raw
sounds and the use of the instrument as a sound box. Lots of percussive
effects, string scratching, a well of ideas and techniques. I don’t feel Daniel
Studer and Peter Fry are listening to each other as closely as they do on Zwei, but it’s a fine performance.
Bogan
Ghost est un duo entre trompette (Liz Allbee) et violoncelle (Anthea Caddy).
Approche très déconstruite de l’improvisation libre – sons désincarnés captés
de très près. Allbee me fait beaucoup penser à Birgit Uhler. L’album propose
sept improvisions, enchâssées par deux pièces plus exploratoires, montées en
studio et intégrant des enregistrements de terrain. Ce sont les moments forts
du disque.
Bogan Ghost is a duo consisting of Liz Allbee (trumpet) and Anthea
Caddy (cello). A highly deconstructed take on free improviation – closely miked
disembodied sounds. Allbee reminds me a lot of Birgit Uhler. The album consists
of seven improvisations book-ended by two more exploratory pieces that are
studio constructions integrating field recordings. I prefer those two pieces to
the main body of the album.

PINHAS & OREN AMBARCHI / Tikkun (Cuneiform)
Oren
Ambarchi fait un très bon partenaire pour Richard Pinhas: à la guitare et aux
électroniques, ses traitements et interventions arrivent à se tailler une belle
place au sein des entrelacs de boucles de guitare du grand maître; à la
batterie, son jeu free et sauvage ajoute une intensité de bon aloi. Tikkun, c’est d’abord un CD de trois titres (31, 13 et 26
minutes) auxquels participent aussi Joe Talia (batterie), Merzbow, Duncan Pinhas
(séquences) et Eric Borelva (batterie). Certains ont participé en temps réel
aux improvisations, d’autres ont ajouté leur touche par la suite, et sur ces
trois pièces Ambarchi reste à la guitare. “Washington D.C. – T4V1” prend de
grandes allures de Heldon dès le départ et demeure le moment fort de l’album.
“San Francisco – T2V2” est coupable de longueurs, mais on ne s’y emmerde pas. Tikkun, c’est aussi un DVD présentant Pinhas et Ambarchi en
concert aux Instants chavirés (Paris) en octobre 2013. Là, Ambarchi, joue la
première moitié de l’impro de 40 minutes à la guitare et la seconde à la
batterie. La performance baigne les projecteurs rouges et le réalisateur délire
beaucoup trop sur les effets miroirs et les tuilages, mais on arrive à étudier
le jeu de Pinhas de plus près. Et la poignée de main finale vaut son pesant
d’or. En fait, cette pièce (“Paris – Part One – TnVO”) est somme toute
meilleure que “San Francisco – T2V2”. [Ci-dessous: Bande-annonce officielle

Oren Ambarchi makes a very good partner for Richard Pinhas: on guitar
and electronics, his treatments and interventions manage to worm their way
into the master’s thick walls of guitar loops; at the drums, his free and
savage form of playing bring a welcome dose of intensity. Tikkun is a CD+DVD package. The CD features three titles (31, 13, 26 minutes)
to which also participate Joe Talie (drums), Merzbow, Duncan Pinhas
(sequences), and Eric Borelva (drums). Some of them took part to the live
improvisation, others added their thing after the fact, and on all three tracks
Ambarchi sticks to the guitar. “Washington D.C. – T4V1” takes grand Heldon
stances early one and will remain the disc’s highlight. “San Francisco – T2V2”
is guilty of overlong bits, but not enough to get bored. The DVD features
Pinhas and Ambarchi live at Les Instants chavirés (Paris) in October 2013. This
time, Ambarchi plays guitar for the first half of the 41-minute performance,
than switches to the drum kit. The performance is basked in red, and the
produced uses way too many mirror and tiling effects, but you do manage to
study Pinhas’s playing up close. And the handshake at the end is priceless. In
fact, this piece (“Paris – Part One – TnVO”) is better than the studio track
“San Francisco – T2V2.” [Below:

Un
autre mini-album de Rough Fields, très différent de l’excellent High Time. Cette fois, il s’agit d’une suite de 22 minutes
en trois mouvements, constituée d’enregistrements de terrain en nature manipulés
en temps réel. Ça contient des basses fréquences qui ont fait tourné mes
moniteurs en bourrique, et ça manque un peu de substance. Agréable mais plutôt
inconséquent.
Another EP by Rough Fields, very different from his excellent High Time. This time we have a
22-minute suite in three movements consisting of nature field recordings
digitally manipulated in real time. It contains bass frequencies that made my
monitors behave erratically, and it lacks a bit of substance. Enjoyable, but
inconsequential.
C’est
mon premier contact avec l’auteur-compositeur-interprète américain Ross Beach,
qui publie des enregistrements maison depuis un bon bout de temps. Ascension Parish est un album de country-folk sardonique.
Les textes sont souvent drôles (les raisons pour lesquelles les femmes du sud
ne l’aiment pas dans “Southern Women”), voire grinçants (“Burn Wall Street”) ou
carrément ridicules (les joies de vivre d’un travailleur de buanderie dans
“Laundry Lint”). Bref, c’est amusant, un brin plus profond que ça en a l’air,
et certaines chansons peuvent se transformer en ver d’oreille.
This is my first contact with US singer-songwriter Ross Beach, who has
been releasing home recordings for a long time now. Ascension Parish is an album of sardonic
country folk music. Lyrics are often funny (the reasons why “Southern Women”
don’t like him), acidic (“Burn Wall Street”) or downright silly (the joys of a
laundry worker in “Laundry Lint”). Fun stuff, deeper than expected, and some of
these songs will turn into earworms if you’re not careful.
