PAS/HATI PRESENT P.H.A.S.T.I. / The Stages of Sleep: A Metaphor for Torun (ind.) Splendide, mais vraiment splendide collaboration entre le quatuor électroacoustique américain PAS et HATI, un duo de percussionnistes polonais. The Stages of Sleep prend la forme d’une suite onirique de drones, de rythmes délicats et de constructions semi-mélodiques semi-texturales qui allient merveileusement abstraction et évocation. A splendid, truly splendid collaboration between US electroacoustic quartet PAS and Polish percussion duo HATI. The Stages of Sleep is a dream suite of drones, delicate rhythms and semi-melodic/semi-textural constructs that wonderfully blend abstraction and evocation. Charming and titillating. Un très bon disque de techno minimaliste/glitch signé Graham “Dids” Dowdall (le Britannique derrière les électroniques du disque de la chanteuse Roshi). Onze pièces de 3 à 5 minutes, dont “3KA-3” et “KEDR” déjà paru sous forme d’un simple plutôt cette année. Constructions rythmiques instables, mélodies squelettiques, sons parfois agressifs, parfois lancinants (les glissements dans “Dopplar”), mais un assemblage assez agréable et plutôt accessible. Et moins froid ou rigoureux que l’approche berlinoise.
A very good record of minimal/glitch techno signed Graham “Dids” Dowdall (the English fellow behind the electronics on singer Roshi’s CD). Eleven 3-to-5-minute pieces, including “3KA-3” and “KEDR” already released as a single earlier this year. Unstable rhythmic concoctions, skeletal melodies, a palette of sounds ranging from agressive to sinewy (the sliding tones in “Dopplar”), but assembled in rather enjoyable and accessible ways. And less cold or rigorous than the Berlin approach.
Ce disque est présenté comme du post-rock/avant-progressif/math-rock. Amusant. À une certaine époque, on aurait dit simplement qu’il s’agit d’un autre classique du futur découvert par Cuneiform Records. En effet, c’est l’album le plus Cuneiformesque qu’a publié Cuneiform depuis un bon bout de temps! Un rock progressif complexe métissé d’approches expérimentales, dans la veine de groupes comme Miriodor, Forever Einstein, PFS, Happy Family, Boom, Chainsaw Jazz et j’en passe. Puissant, exigeant, mais rigolo et accrocheur. J’aime j’aime j’aime. Ceci est leur troisième disque de ce quintette de Brooklyn, mais leur premier pour Cuneiform. [Ci-dessous: Un extrait de l'album.]
This record is presented by the label as post-rock/avant-progressive/math-rock. Funny. A few years ago, it would have been simply introduced as another future classic discovered by Cuneiform. This album is the most Cuneiform-like release on Cuneiform in quite a while. Complex prog rock crossed with experimental approaches, in a vein similar to Miriodor, PFS, Happy Fmaily, Forever Einstein, Boom, Chainsaw Jazz and the likes. Powerfull, demanding, but also funny and hook-laden. I like I like I like. This is this Brooklyn-based quintet’s third album but their first on Cuneiform. [Below: A sound clip from the album.]
Wow. Troisième album de ce groupe suédois de rock progressif instrumental. Et parlez-moi d’un groupe qui a maturé et qui était bien mûr pour faire ses débuts chez Cuneiform! Une écriture capable de nuances, d’humour, de douceur, de complexité épique, mais de lyrisme aussi. Et gage de qualité: l’album a été mixé et produit par Mattias Olsson d’Änglagard et de White Willow. Un must pour les amateurs de prog instrumental, conservateurs ou plus aventureux.
Wow. A third album for this Swedish instrumental prog rock band. And talk about a band ripe for its Cuneiform debut! Songwriting capable of nuances, humor, sweetness, epic complexity, and lyricism. And if you need an extra seal of quality: the album was mixed and produced by Mattias Olson of Anglagard and White Willow. A must-have for instrumental prog fans of both conservative and adventurous persuasions.
