ENSEMBLE X / Ensemble X (Red Toucan)

Ensemble X est un grand ensemble d’improvisation libre dirigé par le tubiste Carl Ludwig Hübsch. Vingt musiciens, surtout de la France, de l’Allemagne et de la Suisse, plus l’Américain Nate Wooley (que fait-il là, au juste?). Parmi les grosses pointures: Martine Altenburger, Xavier Charles, Markus Eichenberger, Ulrich Philipp, Olivier Toulemonde, Michael Vorfeld et Philip Zoubek. L’instrumentation est presque exclusivement acoustique. Ce premier disque propose quatre pièces de 13 à 20 minutes. Malheureusement, elles se ressemblent toutes et consistent essentiellement en bourdons collectifs au volume et à l’amplitude dirigée. Je n’arrive pas à accrocher, même après une deuxième écoute.

Ensemble X is a large free improvisation ensemble led by tuba player Carl Ludwig Hübsch. Twenty musicians mostly from France, Switzerland and Germany, plus US trumpet player Nate Wooley (what’s he doing there?). Among the bigger names are Martine Altenburger, Xavier Charles, Markus Eichenberger, Ulrich Philipp, Olivier Toulemonde, Michael Vorfeld and Philip Zoubek. The instrumentation is almost all acoustic. This debut album features four pieces of 13 to 20 minutes in duration. Sadly, they all sound pretty much the same, consisting for the most part of collective drones, the volume and thickness of which are conducted by Hübsch. I can’t hook on to this CD, even after two listens.

Splendide deuxième album du contrebassiste/électronicien portugais Hugo Carvalhais, dont l’écriture, bien que procédant du jazz, se situe hors des genres. Mélange de musique contemporaine, d’improvisation microsonique, et de jazz actuel, les neuf compositions de Particula créent un univers sonore unique, invitant, confortable même si on y perd ses repères. À comparer avec le récent disque d’Alexandra Grimal chez Ayler Records. Avec Emile Parisien au saxo soprano, Gabriel Pinto qui fait de petits miracles au piano, à l’orgue et au synthé, le violoniste Dominique Pifarély et Mário Costa à la batterie.

Gorgeous sophomore release from Portuguese doublebassist/electronic artist Hugo Carvalhais, whose writing, though emanating from jazz, doesn’t fit in any known genre. A blend of contemporary music, microsonic free improvisation and avant-jazz, Particula’s nine compositions weave a unique and inviting soundworld, comfortable even though you’re bound to lose your markers inside it. In a similar vein to Alexandra Grimal’s recent release on Ayler Records. With Emile Parisien on soprano sax, Gabriel Pinto who performs tiny miracles on piano, organ and synth, violinist Dominique Pifarély, and Mário Costa on drums.

BARKER & BAUMECKER / Transsektoral (Ostgut Ton - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)

Techno berlinoise signée Barker/Voltek et nd_baumecker. Transsektoral est leur premier album, frais paru chez Ostgut Ton. Du beau matériel, bien maîtrisé, métissage de techno minimaliste, de dub, de glitch et d’ambiant. Ça danse sans lourdeur, ça plane avec de la profondeur, et les neuf minutes de la dernière pièce, Spur, touche la beauté du doigt.

Berlin techno from Barker/Voltek and nd_baumecker. Transsektoral is their debut CD just out on Ostgut Ton. Some fine material, confident-sounding, a blend of minimal techno, dub, glitch, and ambient. Dances without any heaviness, trips with depth, and the nine-minute closer Spur is downright beautiful.
