C JOYNES / Revenants, Prodigies And The Restless Dead (Bo Weavil - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)

A beautiful record of folk guitar and banjo, strong Americana flavour, with heavy John Fahey leanings. Some traditional tunes, but mostly originals. Delicate and stripped down. [Below: “Mob-Happy,” a track from the album. Two more sound clips here.]

HEATHER WOODS BRODERICK / From the Ground (Preservation - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)

A successful debut from this multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter. She is Peter Broderick’s sister, and her brother plays on her album. She has the same delicate touch too. An album of sour and melancholy songs based on acoustic instruments (piano, violin, guitar) and quiet electronic textures. Nothing rushed, everything develops in time, preciously, dressing up her little kernel of voice. This fits the folktronica description, but the songwriting is timeless. [Below: A song from the album, “Wounded Bird,” performed live with Peter Broderick. Lots more songs from that concert on YouTube,]

GUNDA GOTTSCHALK & XU FENGXIA / You Lan (Disques Victo)

FIMAV connoisseurs knew that this was THE 2008 FIMAV concert that just had to come out on CD. What telepathy, magic, and complimentary between German voilinist Gunda Gottschalk and guzheng player Xu Fengxia! These two great improvisers gave a performance filled with emotion, exploration, and vocalizations. The human being stripped naked, poetized, and reinvented into an entity accepting and embracing his contrasts and contradictions. And nothing (or very very little) of that is lost on this pristine recording,

2009-09-30: Van der Graaf Generator, Synchronator

Journal d'écoute/Listening Diary

2009-09-30

I’m drowning in work all of a sudden. Little time to listen today, even less tomorrow. Still, I went through two records, are they’re definitely worth reviewing.

VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR / Live at the Paradiso (Voiceprint)

On this blog, June 30, 2009, I reviewed the DVD version of this April 2007 concert. The release of the 2-CD audio version had been pushed back, but here it is finally. So what more can I say? Go back and read the June 30 entry again! Seriously, after catching Van der Graaf Generator live three times this summer, I conclude that Live at the Paradiso does not capture the “power trio” line-up at the best of times. The 2009 tour was more energetic, crazy, and uplifting. That said, it’s still a rare opportunity to watch VDGG in action, with good sound and filmed with multiple cameras. Having recently lost their sax player, the trio was playing little new material (two songs that would end up on 2008’s Trisector), but there’s a lot of nice surprises, and several differences between this set list and the one featured on the previous live album Real Time. Live at the Paradiso may not be an absolute must-have (for its rather ordinary sound quality), but you can’t really go wrong with it.

SYNCHRONATOR / Synchronator (Cavity - merci à/thanks to Dense Promotion)

Synchronator are electronic artist Gert Jan Prins and video artist Bas van Koolwijk. Their approach combines interference plays with sine waves synchronized with (or translated into?) interference plays with TV scan patterns. In other words, the audio clicks and feedback are paired to cathodic distortions – a ballet of rippling lines and undetermined shapes in black and white. It’s raw, stupefyingly simple, and incredibly tightly synchronized. Interference illusions that will have you get up and bang on your TV set. Released as a short (36-minute) DVD. AMBARCHI/FENNESZ/PIMMON/REHBERG/ROWE / Afternoon Tea (Black Truffle - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)

Un must.

Recorded in 2000 on an Australian tour, this record, first released by Ritornell, has had a great impact on establising electroacoustic improvisation and on the careers of Oren Ambarchi and Christian Fennesz, who both came out of that tour with renewed inspiration, enough to reorient their styles – Fennesz would record his seminal Endless Summer a year later. Highly experimental – and intergenerational – music with two electric guitars (Ambarchi and Keith Rowe) and three laptops (Fennesz, Pimmon, and Peter Rehberg aka Pita). Restrained music all about textures and hues. To the original two extended pieces, the Black Truffle label has added a bonus track that appeared on a Ritornell compilation in 2000, plus two previously unavailable (and lost!) live recordings. A must-have.

AARON MARTIN / Chautauqua (Preservation - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)

Third solo effort by cellist and sound sculptor Aaron Martin. What a nice record! Music so delicate you’re scared to break it if you make a noise. Cello, electronics, mandolin, banjo, field recordings. It brings together roots music and electroacoustics, folk and stripped-down free improvisation. Quiet and peaceful, yet highly intense. Very well done. And delivered in one of Preservation’s typical packagings - actually a poster folded several times.

KARUNA KHYAL / Alomoni 1985 (Phoenix Records - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)

WOW!!!

WOW!!! I’m flabbergasted. Originally released in 1976 (reissued in 2009 by Phonix Records), Alomoni 1985 is an album by Japanese band Karuna Khyal. This is a highly obscure experimental rock LP, although both Nurse with Wound and Julian Cope have referenced it. And I understand them! Two 20+minute tracks that are experimental collage suites that bring to mind an unholy union between Faust and Captain Beefheart: all-out textural experiments, repetitive pulses, unintelligible bluesy rants, and an electronic side that prefigures Nurse with Wound. It’s amazing how this band: 1) was a lot closer to German avant-rock than anything happening in Japan at the time; 2) well ahead of its time, as much for Industrial music and Japanese avant-rock (Fushitsusha, LSD March) than for what would become known as “New Weird America” Fans of strange, unclassifiable stuff, don’t miss out on this one!

BLOSSOM TOES / What on Earth: Rarities 1967-69 (Sunbeam - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)

This UK psych band ranks among the best of the “forgotten” groups in the genre. After reissuing their two LPs (We Are Ever So Clean and If Only for a Moment), the Sunbeam label offers this collection of demos, odds and ends recorded between these two album. There’s a bit of everything on there: psych-folk ballads in the style of the first LP, heavier songs more typical of the second LP, silly instrumentals (one is led by a vibraphone, and it’s kitsch as hell!), and songs that would be redeveloped by post-Blossom Toes projects. Worth noting are excellent versions of “First Love Song” and “New Day”, but mostly two incredible versions of “Peace Loving Man,” which remains of the heaviest and strangest hard-rockers recorded in England before the ‘70s.

2009-09-29: Heddy Boubaker, Oliver Tabeling Trio, Wilkommen Collective, Camouflage, Black to Comm

2009-09-28

HEDDY BOUBAKER / Lack of Conversation (Creative Sources)

Some time ago, saxophonist Heddy Boubaker sent me a few records, namely the first release on his Un Rêve Nu imprint and his duo with Soizic Lebrat. In the same package was this solo CD released in 2006 on which I had missed out. In the booklet, Boubaker states that this is not music but “”technico/poetic sound work.” I agree. Think of the sonic experiments of John Butcher or Bhob Rainey. This music is intense, focused on the saxophone’s microsonics, it’s music the artist has to drag from deep inside the instrument. Sighs, gurgles, whispers, all perfectly controled and arranged into abstract sound paintings in shades of grey and connected to an atavistic power. It’s also a very clear manifesto.

OLIVER TABELING TRIO / Walking along the river: Live at the Bird’s Eye (Unit Records)

I’m surprised to hear jazz this conventional on Unit Records, a Swiss label that usually releases avant-jazz and creative music. Now, this trio isn’t bad (Oliver Tabeling, piano; Michael Chylewski, bass; David Meier, drums). In fact, their soft bop is pretty enjoyable, but it’s also very predictable and, honestly, I lack an in-depth knowledge of the jazz tradition to say something intelligent about this new music of the past. In other words, this kind of orthodox jazz is not my cup of tea.

ARTISTES VARIÉS-VARIOUS ARTISTS / Willkommen Collective Volume 1 (Willkommen - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)

Wilkommen Collective is an English folk collective and label. Several musicians revolve around it and play in various groupings, like Laish Quartet, Sons of Noel and Adrian, Shoreline, Hamilton Yarns, and The Leisure Society, among others. These groups cover a wide palette of styles – from very simple female folk to ambient post-folk, and stuff that comes close to the freaky sounds of the “New Weird America” rop – but there’s a distinct group unity that makes the compilation enjoyable to listen to, a “sound” like the Jewelled Antler Collective-related projects all shared a similar sound signature. A nice pensive mood, a few strong songs, and a handful of artists worth discovering.

CAMOUFLAGE / Spice Crackers (Bureau B - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)

German electropop. In 1995, the duo Camouflage, who had already scored a few dancefloor hits, decided to redirect their sound into a so-called more experimental vein. The result is Spice Crackers, about which there’s nothing experimental except the claims on the press release, except for an occasional repetitive instrumental that brings Cluster to mind. The press release says that this Bureau B reissue adds a bonus CD with 14 tracks taken from the sessions and highlighting the experimental process behind the album – fine, except that the promo copy doesn’t include that disc! Oh, the hell with it.

BLACK TO COMM / Alphabet 1968 (Type Records - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)

What a nice surprise: Marc Richter (Black to Comm) on Type Records! I really like Richter’s take on drones – he turns them into moving-yet-Dada sensory experiences. That said, Alphabet 1968 signals a shift in his art, since it delivers 10 tracks in 45 minutes (you’d expect half as many in twice as long). Black To Comm in song format? Yep, and it works marvelously well. Ten sound vignettes with rich, noisy (and occasionally melancholy) textures, trippy, unique, destabilizing, and most of all very, very successful. Congratulations Marc! This CD could very well finish end up in a high-ranking position on my 2009 Top 30... [Below: Official video for “Hotel Freund,” the last track on the album.]
