De retour de deux concerts de Van der Graaf Generator en deux jours, pas tout à fait remis physiquement (et le serai-je jamais mentalement? le voudrais-je?). Obligation de travailler en ce samedi, ce qui, au moins, me donne l’occasion de faire un peu d’écoute en même temps. Commençons calmement...
Back from back-to-back Van der Graaf Generator concerts, and I’m not entirely over it, physically and mentally (and would I want to be?). Need to catch up on work on this fine Saturday... At least it gets me the opportunity to do some listening. I’ll start smoothly.
DANIEL MEYER GRØNVOLD & HÅVARD VOLDEN / Daniel Meyer Grønvold & Håvard Volden (Creative Sources)
Un disque très court (29 minutes) mais satisfaisant, mettant en vedette deux guitaristes jouant de l’acoustique “tabletop”, des électroniques maison et un dictaphone (Grønvald) ou un discman (Volden). De l’improvisation texturale, haute en résonances, posée et minutieuse.
A very short (29 minutes) but satisfying record featuring two guitarist playing tabletop acoustic, lo-fi electronics, and a dictaphone (Grønvald) or discman (Volden). Textural improvisation strongly relying on quiet resonances, well thought out and careful.
GEOFF LEIGH & YUMI HARA / Upstream (Moonjune)
Le second disque de Yumi Hara chez Moonjune. Le premier était en duo avec Hugh Hopper. Cette fois, un duo avec le flûtiste et saxophoniste Geoff Leigh (Henry Cow, nombreux projets liés au jazz-rock de type Canterbury). Une collaboration solide, toute en nuances. Des pièces douces, introspectives, frôlant parfois le drone. Plus de chant de la part de Hara, dont la voix hante plus qu’elle n’envoûte (ce qui n’est pas un mauvais point). Leigh est plein de ressources, multipliant les approches et les instruments. Un beau disque à réécouter à tête reposée. Une belle découverte, plutôt accessible, pas tout à fait “impro libre” mais certainement pas jazz-rock non plus. Yumi Hara’s second CD for Moonjune. The first one was a duo session with Hugh Hopper. This time, she is playing with flutist/saxophonist Geoff Leigh (of Henry Cow and several jazz-rock projects loosely tied to the Canterbury sphere). A strong collaboration, very nuanced. Quiet, introspective pieces occasionally verging on drones. More singing from Hara, whose voice is haunting more than rapturing (which is not a bad thing). Leigh is very resourceful, approaching the music in many different ways and with several instruments. A fine record I will happily listen to again once I’m well rested. A nice discovery, rather accessible, not quite “free improv” but definitely not a jazz-rock record either. MERIDIEM / A Pleasant Fiction (Pangea/Voiceprint)
Ma première expérience avec Meridiem a été fort négative (un disque en concert au son douteux). Cet album studio (d’abord paru en 2004, réédité en 2009) est nettement plus intéressant. Percy Howard (l’homme derrière ce projet) a un bon sens de la chanson et il sait s’entourer. Malheureusement, le livret ne donne pas de détail sur qui fait quoi, mais participent au disque, entre autres, Bill Laswell, Vernon Reid et Charles Hayward (la base du groupe), plus Buckethead, Jarboe, Matt Donner, Renee Nelson, Robert Rich et Happy Rhodes. C’est une production laswellienne: couches multiples de sons, fort accent sur le rythme, électroniques texturales, trituration des voix. Mais il s’agit de bonne pop alternative appuyée sur des fondements presque hip-hop. Très agréable et accessible (à mon échelle, du moins).
My first contact with Meridien left a bad impression (a live CD with a bad sound). This studio album (first released in 2004, reissued in 2009) is much more interesting. Percy Howard – the man behind this project – has a sound sense of song, and he knows how to handpick a strong team. Sadly, the bookley doesn’t say who does what, but the list of participants include, among others: Bill Laswell, Vernon Reid and Charles Hayward (the nucleus of the group), plus Buckethead, Jarboe, Matt Donner, Renee Nelson, Robert Rich, and Happy Rhodes. It’s a typical Laswellian production: multiple layers of sounds, focus on rhythm, textural electronics, treated vocals. But it’s good alternative pop-rock with a hip-hop basis. Very enjoyable and accessible (well, compared to my usual listens).
VRIL / The Fatal Duckpond (ReR Megacorp)
Un bon second disque pour Vril, plusieurs années après le premier, mais moins excitant à première écoute que le premier. Le côté “surf rock pour amateur de RIO” est atténué, même si on est encore quelque part en marge de l’univers sonore de Forever Einstein. Si l’écriture est moins instantanément accrocheuse, l’interprétation et le mixage (Bob Drake, dieu du studio) sont irréprochables. Pour ceux qui ne connaissent pas, Vril = Lukas Simonis (guitare), Bob Drake (basse) et Chris Cutler (batterie), plus pour ce disque Pierre Omer (guitare).
A good second album for Vril several years after their debut, although this one is less exciting on first listen. The “surf rock for the RIO fan” side as been toned down, although we are still in the margins of the soundworld of Forever Einstein. If the writing is less instantly catchy, the musicianship and mixing (Bob Drake, studio God) are quite imrpessive. For those not in the know, Vril = Lukas Simonis (guitar), Bob Drake (bass), and Chris Cutler (drums), plus on this record Pierre Omer (guitar).
SIMON STEENSLAND / Fat Again (AltrOck)
Un retour pour Simon Steensland, semble-t-il, mais je ne l’ai jamais entendu avant ce disque. Cela dit, wow! De l’avant-prog très près d’Univers Zéro (période Heatwave) et Present, avec Morgen Agren et Robert Elovsson du Mats/Morgan Band et Einar Baldursson de Gösta Berlings Saga, entre autres. Une écriture intense, pesante, complexe, mais avec une certaine dose d’humour aussi. Encore un coup soilde de l’étiquette AltrOck!
A come-back for Simon Steensland, or so the press releases says, ‘cause I hadn’t heard this guys prior to Fat Again. That being said, wow! Avant-prog very close to Heatwave-era Univers Zero and Present, with Morgen Agren and Robert Elovsson (of Mats/Morgan Band) and Einar Baldursson (of Gösta Berlings Saga). Intense, heavy, complex rock with a healthy dose of humor. Another top release from the AltrOck label!
