HUGUES VINCENT & YASUMUNE MORISHIGE / Fragment (Improvising Beings)
Two cellists in a French studio for two days. Nine short free improvisations, and nothing fragmentary about them. Taken as a whole they paint a fully-formed sound world of intermingling techniques. Noise-based approaches entertwine with a quest for sonic purity. An enveloping, reverberating sound, quite seductive. The final three pieces are particularly enjoyable.

HUGUES VINCENT / Early Electroacoustic Works (Odiolorgnette)
Julien Palomo of the Improvising Beings label sent a few other records by Hugues Vincent along with Fragment. This one is unexpected... and uneven. First we have 11 short pieces (35 minutes in all) grouped in a suite entitled “Phonoscope & fabulettes.” They are mixed pieces where the cell is either prepared, treated, or backed by field recordings. It’s a bit of a hodge-podge, but there are some strong moments, and the suite as a whole displays a high level of creativity. Then we have a 28-minute piece called “Tales of Noboru” inspired by Yukio Mishima. This one features cello, snippets of uncredited Japanese traditional music, treatments, and stretches of silence. Intriguing at first, it grows dull, as it lacks cohesion.

GANJIN / Healing (Ganjin)
And here’s Hugues Vincent in a very different setting: an avant-rock power trio consisting of viola (Frantz Loriot), cello, and drum kit (Yuko Oshima). Six pieces, with individual compositions from all three musicians plus a short collective improvisation. The writing and the playing often evoke Volapük – same kind of acoustic avant-prog – though some pieces are heavier than that. I really like the opening track “Healing”: it starts like a minimalist study for string duo, then it degenerates into an incredibly fierce riff with the drummer’s entry. Bravo. [Below: “Healing.” The whole album can be found on Ganjinsound’s soundcloud.]

Wonderful cello/voice duo (though there’s plenty of other instruments involved too) that evokes Quebecois musique actuelle, toy music (Klimperei, etc.), the Japanese naive music scene, and European free improvisation. Short tracks, often on the playful side of things, carried by a breath of zaniness though firmly anchored by a deep level of understanding between the musicians. Of the four Hugues Vincent records I received, this one is the prize winner, plus I get to discover Maki Hachiya, a surprising experimental singer.

THE INTERNATIONAL NOTHING / The Dark Side of Success (Ftarri)

[Ci-dessous: “Beat ‘em All”].
The International Nothing is a clarinet duo. And there are no guests this time, unlike on their debut CD Mainstream. That’s just as well, for Kai Fagaschinski and Michael Thieke are able, on the own, to weave a delicate harmonic fabric, very simple, and slowly unfolding. Long notes perfectly sustained, exceptionally well mastered frequency flapping. Minimalistic? Sure, in its palette, form, and intent. But it’s fascinating and beautiful. The sleeve designed by tanabemse is also beautiful, so beautiful in fact that I decided to put the whole outside of the gatefold above instead of just the cover. [Below: “Beat ‘em All.”]

PLASMIC / Live at Chilli Jazz Festival 2013 (Leo Records)
Talentueux.
A pretty acoustic free improvisation quartet, from Austria I’m guessing. With singer Agnes Heginger, pianist Elisabeth Harnik, Uli Winter on cello, and Fredi Proll on drums. I’m not really familiar with any of them, but they form a tight-sounding, well-honed ensemble. Fine synergy, a relaxed sound that leaves room for silence and pregnant pauses, with a focus on light (in weight, not in content) interventions.

ZEBRINA / Hamidbar Medaber (Tzadik - merci à/thanks to Braithwaite & Katz)
A Canadian band who lend klezmer and jazz-rock. Their second CD Hamidbar Medaber just came out on Tzadik, and it prominently features famous clarinettist Ben Goldberg as a guest. An enjoyable band. Their sound is dominated in part by Janthan Feldman’s vintage keyboards – Fender Rhodes piano and Hamoond B3 organ. Solos tend to pile up, stretching tracks slightly beyond what is reasonable, but the writing is charming and the approach is heartfelt and non-purist. Fine exchanges between keys and guitar, and Goldberg’s presence is the icing on the cake.

ORLANDO JULIUS with THE HELIOCENTRICS / Jaiyede Afro (Strut Records – merci à/thanks to HIM Media)
[Ci-dessous: “Buje Buje”.]
Orlando is a veteran of Nigeria’s afro-funk scene, the king of afro-pop, and he’s been enjoying a come-back lately – his old records are getting reissued in the Northern hemisphere. Now, The Heliocentrics are a London-based band led by drummer Malcolm Catto. They offered to be Julius’s backing band for a whole album. And it’s pure dy-no-mite. Jayede Afro was recorded in an all-analog studio. The sound is vintage, but top-notch vintage – the kind of sound quality Julius has rarely, if ever, enjoyed. The songs are sharp, the performances are prime, the whole thing sounds like gold. Put this one at the top of your afro-funk list. The Heliocentrics have done for Orlando Julius what The Ex have done for Getatchew Mekuria: give a great African musician the ideal conditions he deserves. [Below: “Buje Buje.”]

Avant-Jazz: The Shorts: I have so many new avant-jazz/free improv releases to present that I’ll have to split them into two weeks. So I might as well have some fun with them: tonight it will be an all-short tracks program; last week, it was an all-long tracks one.

Live, 2011, when their debut CD came out, though they’re performing “Wren”, which ended up on their second opus, just released. Watch out for the drummer’s fabulous solo.
