SO PERCUSSION / Cage 100: Bootleg Series (Cantaloupe Music - merci à/thanks to dotdotdotmusic)

John Cage aurait eu 100 ans en 2012 et, pour souligner l’occasion, le quatuor de percussions So Percussion propose un projet d’envergure, à commencer par une longue tournée dont le programme consiste en œuvres de Cage (“Credo in US”, “Imaginary Landscape #1”, “Third Construction”, etc.) et inspirées par lui (“Bottles” de Dan Deacon, “Needles” de Matmos, etc.). Cage 100: Bootleg Series est un “coffret” physique/virtuel très particulier qui comprend: 1 vinyle 12” vierge avec pochette fait-main, une compilation CD d’extraits de la tournée (compilé à l’aide du I Ching) et une carte portant un code d’accès qui permet de télécharger une tonne d’enregistrements issus des concerts de la tournée (cette liste continue de s’allonger, d’ailleurs). Les enregistrements sont réellement de qualité “bootleg”, très écoutables au demeurant. Évidemment, les œuvres se répètent d’un concert à l’autre mais se ressemblent peu, vu le rôle que jouent le hasard et le choix dans l’univers cageien. Édition limitée à 300 exemplaires. John Cage would have turned 100 years old in 2012 and, to celebrate, percussion quartet So Percussion has put together a grand project, starting with a long tour with a program of Cage works (“Credo in US,” “Imaginary Landscape #1,” “Third Construction,” etc.) and Cage-inspired works (Dan Deacon’s “Bottles,” Matmos’ “Needles” and other collaborations with So Percussion). Cage 100: Bootleg Series is a very original physical/virtual “box set” including: a blank LP with hand-made jacket; a tour sampler CD (compiled using the I Ching); and a card with an access code to download tons of recordings from the tour (the list of recordings is still growing). Recordings are bootleg-quality indeed, but quite listenable. Obviously, works are featured more than once, but count on Cage’s reliance on chance operations and performer choices to make sure that no two performances are quite alike. STUTTGARTER STRASSE / Ansichtkarten Aus Wales EP (Discrient Hearing/AWAL Records - merci à/thanks to John Bourke PR)

Ce disque (dont le titre se traduit par “Cartes postales du Pays de Galles”) est un hommage à Kraftwerk signé Justin Toland. Quatre chansons électroniques minimalistes à la voix robotisée portant sur l’ère post-industrielle. L’ambiance Kraftwerk est facile à reconnaître, mais l’approche de Toland est encore plus dépouillée et répétitive que ce que faisait le groupe allemand. Rapidement lassant.

This EP (whose title transltes to “Postcards from Wales”) is a tribute to Kraftwerk by one Justin Toland. Four minimal electronic songs about the post-industrial era, capped by a robotic voice. The Kraftwerk atmosphere rings true, but Toland’s music is even more stripped-down and repetitive than the German band’s. And it quickly grows tiresome.

VVV / Across the Sea (Fortified Audio Records - merci à/thanks to John Bourke PR)

Shawhin Izaddoost, alias VVV, fait dans la techno pulsante, dansante, mais réfléchie. Sur Across the Sea, il fait preuve d’un certain flair pour monter des bribes de chant et faire valser ses rythmes vers des univers plus dub. Cela dit, ça demeure assez simple, trop à mon goût.

Shawhim Izaddoost, aka VVV, plays pulsing, dancing, thoughtful techno music. On Across the Sea, he displays a certain talent for assembling bits of singing into melodies and pushing his beats into dub pastures. Still, it all remains pretty simple - too simple and predictable for my liking.

I TRENI ALL’ALBA / 2011 A.D. (Inri)

Groupe italien de rock progressif instrumental, I Treni All’Alba fait dans les guitares mordantes. Pas vraiment prog metal, mais 2011 A.D. déménage pas mal. Un peu linéaire dans l’écriture, mais les arrangements ont du chien. Sympa.

An Italian instrumental progressive rock band, I Treni All’Alba are a crunchy guitar-led combo. Not quite prog metal, though 2011 A.D. sure rocks hard. Slightly linear in the composition department, but the arrangements are racy. A fun album.
