BLUETECH / Love Songs to the Source (Interchill Records - merci à/thanks to John Bourke P.R.)

Un disque très bien d’électro chill signé Bluetech, soit Evan Bartholomew (qui, sous son vrai nom, a aussi commis des musiques post-classique). Love Songs to the Source est mixé avec un fort penchant dub, tout en demeurant dans l’univers planant de la musique chill. Jolies collaborations avec Dr. Israel et Katrina Blackstone. L’ouverture “Seed To Soil”, très dub, et la clôture “Escape”, ambiante, planante et mélodique à souhait, résument le parcours de cette longue galette (76 minutes). Et une autre splendide pochette, marque de commerce d’Interchill. [Le site d’Interchill (ci-dessus) propose de nombreux extraits à écouter.]

A very fine record of electro-chill signed Bluetech, aka Evan Bartholomew (who, under his real name, has also recorded post-classical music). Love Songs to the Source is mixed with a strong dub leaning, while staying close to the trippy soundworld of chillout music. Nice collaborations with Dr. Israel and Katrina Blackstone. The dub-flavoured opener “Seed To Soil” and the ambiant, trippy, melodic closer “Escape” sum up the sonic palette of this long platter (76 minutes). JAMES TEEJ / Evening Harvest (Rekids Records - merci à/thanks to John Bourke P.R.)

Du deep techno intelligent, avec, occasionnellement, une tendance à expérimenter avec les textures. Plutôt linéaire en surface, mais pas unidimensionnel. Il se passe beaucoup de choses en filigrane. Pas mauvais du tout, mais un peu trop techno pour mes goûts personnels.

Intelligent deep techno with an occasional foray into textural experiments. Rather linear on the surface, but not one-dimensional. There’s a lot going on in filigree. Not bad at all, but a bit too techno for my own taste.

AXIS TRIO / Anthem (Accretions)

Intéressant trio de musiciens américains aux origines orientales (Maroc, Pakistan et Iran). Du bon jazz actuel où l’électronique vient altérer la réalité, subtilement et presque sans le remarquer. Toutes les pièces sont signées Amino Belyamani (le pianiste). Un jazz moderne qui fleure la scène européenne, avec un peu plus de chaleur, voire de romantisme. Un peu surprenant venant de l’étiquette Accretions (habituellement plus expérimentale que ça).

Interesting trio of American musicians with foreign origins (Morocco, Pakistan, and Iran). Good avant-jazz where electronics come in to alter reality in a subtle, almost undetected way. All the tunes are pianist Amino Belyamani’s. Modern jazz with a strong European flavour, though a little warmer, even romantic at times. Surprising coming from the Accretions label (usually releasing music more experimental than that).

MERZBOW / Shirasagi: 13 Japanese Birds Pt. 11 (Important Records)

Avec des titres comme “Transformed into Food” (venant d’un végétalien) et “Dismemberment of Nature”, voilà un volume qui ne s’annonce pas jovial. Effectivement. On n’y trouve rien de nouveau non plus. Le barrage percussif qui distingue ce projet est devenu éminemment prévisible à ce stade. Tout de même une belle énergie et une efficacité toute merzbowesque. Dans la moyenne de la série.

With titles like “Transformed into Food” (coming from a vegan) and “Dismemberment of Nature”, this volume wasn’t going to be cheerful. Bingo. It also has nothing new to offer. The percussive barrage that is the signature sound of this series has grown extremely predictable by now. Still, a fine energy and a typical Merzbowan efficiency. An average title for this series.
