STELLARI STRING QUARTET / Gocce Stellari (Emanem)

An “all-star” (yes, it’s a pun) European free improvisation string quartet: Philipp Wachsmann, Charlotte Hug, Marcio Mattos, and John Edwards. One concert session from 2007, one studio session from 2006.This music is cold but intense, and would be very close to contemporary chamber music, if it weren’t for its (rightfully) spontaneous nature. For this kind of music, and from these musicians, I hve heard better, but it’s still a very interesting record. Highly coherent group sound, where individualities are fused, string textures intermingling, just like you couldn’t tell a pianist’s index finger from his ring finger.

CREPUSCULE TRIO / Unveil (Curcumvention)

A modern jazz record from Alan Cook (drums), Ken Kawamura (sax) and Anthony Shadduck (doublebass), the first two penning the compositions. Enjoyable, but that’s all. I didn’t quite click on it. I’ll give it a second listen soon, maybe my mind was elsewhere.

RAOUL SINIER / Tremens Industry (Ad Noiseam - merci à/thanks to Dense Promotion)

Experimental techno switching between clumping breakbeats and all-out experimentation. Raoul Sinier is a pluridisciplinary artist who’s approaching electronica through the European club culture. This CD delivers complex rhythms and layered pieces of uneven interest. There are two forgettable songs, but also a few strong instrumentals, including “Map for a Tactical Nonsense,” a fun glitch meltdown. And Sinier is also a visual artist, and this album includes a DVD with almost 2 hours worth of art videos and exhibition documents – I haven’t watched it yet, so I’ll report back on that part of the set.

HEARTS NO STATIC / Motif (Bureau B - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)

A nice surprise from Sweden. This trio plays post-rock crossed with krautrock. Yes, a blend of Tarentel/Mogwai and Cluster, with a bit of Kayo Dot and the ambient guitars of Godspeed You! Black Emperor. The approach is experimental, but the music is easy to get into, dark and melancholy but never intimidating. The short opener “Lowlands” sums up the record. Some pieces focus on the el.gtr/bass/drums power trio, while others feature acoustic guitar and piano. A very analog-sounding recording. Very well done, especially for a debut album.

APSE / Climb Up (ATP Recordings - merci à/thanks to Dense Promotion)

A fun indie rock record, with sharp and varied arrangements, some strong bass parts, a psychedelic side that reminds me of Earthmonkey, and Sonic Youth-like no wave leanings. I’m not head over heels about this one, but I sure wasn’t bored. The press release mentions “post-rock”, but I really don’t see why.
