ASHER QUINN / Open Secret (Voiceprint)

Asher Quinn’s first album, released in 1986 and recently reissued on CD. It’s New-Age type instrumental music – nicely done, but way too sweet for me. The presence of Anthony Phillips (Genesis) and Andy Latimer (Camel) isn’t enough for this to take off.

IT’S THE END / It’s the End (Musea Parallele)

A Norwegian trio that blends Zappa’s jazz-rock with the electroacoustic improv of Supersilent and the cross-stylistic madness of Mr. Bungle. It’s entertaining, surprising, mad, and quite confusing, to the point where it’s hard to believe that all twelve tracks are performed by the same band! Labeling this album as avant-prog is limiting its palette to its most obvious portion. That said, I can hear an original group sound that might benefit from being stripped from a few influences that are worn a little too obviously. Either this record will broaden your horizons or its extreme diversity will force you to quit. My horizons are pretty broad thank you, but that won’t keep from coming back to this record several times! ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE MELTING PARAISO U.F.O. / Minstrel in the Galaxy (Riot Season)

[The continuation of my Temple-esques adventures that started on July 27.] Unexpected to see a Jethro Tull album providing the basis for this album’s pun title (Zappa, Gong, or even David Bowie are more usual sources). Released in 2004, Minstrel in the Galaxy features the core of AMT since its beginnings or so, minus Cotton Casino: Tsuyama, Higashi, Koizumi, and Kawabata. The album consists of three tracks, the first one being a cosmc introduction to the title track, a 40+minute affair where the group hits an all-time quiet level. In fact, I don’t think they have ever recorded something this calm this long (Troubadours from a Heavenly World comes close). Very introspective and a bit soporific. Let’s mention the presence of Afrirampo’s Oni and Pikacyu. “St. Bel Canta” concludes the CD on sweet vocal flights (by Tiffany). This album is in a category of its own and should be approached as such.
