DOUG KIRCHELL / Berkeley in the Sixties (ABC Entertainment/Voiceprint)
Ce documentaire était finaliste pour l’Oscar du meilleur documentaire en 1990. Ce n’est pas un documentaire musical, même s’il est réédité par l’étiquette Voiceprint (qui m’en a envoyé un exemplaire). Cela dit, c’est un excellent portrait du mouvement étudiant au collège Berkeley (Californie) dans les années 60, là où les premières grandes manifestations étudiantes ont eu lieu aux États-Unis, en lien direct avec le développement de la contreculture et parallèlement à la fondation des Black Panthers dans le même patelin. À travers des documents d’archives et des entrevues réalisées dans les années 80 avec certains activistes de l’époque, ce film brosse un bon portrait des motivations et des déviations, des manifestations anti-McCarthystes jusqu’à l’épuisement du mouvement après l’expérience du People’s Park en 1969. This has very little to do with music, but the Voiceprint label is reissuing this documentary, which was nominated for an Oscar in 1990. It is an excellent portrait of the students’ movement at Berkeley College (California) in the ‘60s, where the first important US students’ manifestations took place, in direct relation with the emergence of the counterculture, and in the same place where the Black Panthers formed. Using archive footage and interviews with some of the era’s activists (made in the ‘80s), Berkeley in the Sixties paints a comprehensive picture of the motivations and deviations of the students, from the anti-McCarthysm demonstrations to the movement’s collapse following the People’s Park experiment in 1969. MC MAGUIRE / Trash of Civilization (Innova Recordings)
MC Maguire est un compositeur et artiste sonore de Toronto. Ceci est son second disque chez Innova. Maguire propose deux pièces maximalistes, de l’art sonore qui bouge beaucoup. “The Spawn of Abe”, pour clarinette en si bémol, hautbois et ordinateur, est un double concerto représentant un combat apocalyptique entre les trois religions monothéistes: éléments klezmer et arabisants, échantillons sonores variés, une cacophonie contrôlée, surdose d’information qui requiert plusieurs écoutes afin d’en peler les strates et les significations. “Narcissus auf Bali” suit un modèle similaire, s’attachant au mythe grec de Narcisse, la présence du vibraphone (Trevor Tureski) et du marimba (Ryan Scott) évoquant le gamelan. Un disque saisissant et chargé.
MC Maguire is a Toronto-based composer and sound artist. This is his second CD for Innova. Trash of Civilization consists of two maximalist works of sound art. “The Spawn of Abe” for Bb clarinet, oboe, and computer is a double concerto portraying the apocalyptic clash between the three monotheist religions: Klezmer music and Arab elements, a plethora of sound samples, a well-controled chaos, an overdose of information that will require several listens in order to peel the many layers of sounds and meanings. “Narcissus auf Bali” follows a similar template, this time based on the Greek myth of Narcissus, the vibraphone (Trevor Tureski) and marimba (Ryan Scott) evoking the soundworld of gamelan. This CD is stunning and loaded.
BULBUL, MERZBOW, PEACH PIT, WOLFGANG FUCHS / Supernova 2 (Interstellar Records - merci à/thanks to Dense Promotion)
Il s’agit d’une compilation sur deux vinyles 10 pouces, où chacune des quatre faces est occupée par un artiste différent (environ 12 minutes chacun). Pris ensembles, ces quatre artistes représentent une palette stylistique très large et éclectique. Bulbul fait dans le rock bruitiste, avec une veine folk. Le roi de la noise, Merzbow, propose une pièce solide, datant d’avant son amour renouvelé pour la batterie (au cas où ça vous inquiète). Peach Pit est un trio math rock de Croatie, très sympathique et quelque peu similaire à Bz Bz Ueu ou Pin Pin Sugar. Wolfgang Fuchs propose deux collages sonores à partir de vinyle - bien mais pas génial, fait penser à Philip Jeck époque Vinyl Coda. Une compilation drôlement compilée, sans idée centrale.
This is a compilation album released as a double-10inch set where each side is taken by a different artist (roughly 12 minutes each). Taken together, the four artists cover a wide and eclectic palette of styles. Bulbul are into folk-tinged noise rock. The king of japanoise, Merzbow, turns in a strong track that seems to pre-date his rekindled interest in the drum kit (in case you wondered). Peach Pit is a math rock trio from Croatia – quite enjoyable and similar to Bz Bz Ueu and Pin Pin Sugar. Wolfgang Fuchs offers two vinyl-based audio collages that are nice but not great, and somewhat reminiscent of Vinyl Coda-era Philip Jeck. A strangely compiled compilation that lacks a central idea.
