2e écoute/2nd listen: ARTISTES VARIÉS-VARIOUS ARTISTS / Dante’s Inferno (The Divine Comedy, Part 1) (Musea)

Had some work to do today, so I revisited part of this concept compilation and, once again, I have flabbergasted by the consistent quality of this string of collaborative projects between Musea and the magazine Colossus. This project is the most ambitious of them all: setting to music (‘70s prog rock style) Dante Aligheri’s Divine Comedy, a founding text of the Italian literature, and one of the great works of World Literature. What we have here is FOUR CDs covering only the first volume of the work: Inferno. Each contributing band was attributed one chapter (or chant), with the mission to make what they wanted of it (taking it literaly or symbolically), in their own tongue. There are great songs from the likes of Yesterdays, Nathan Mahl, and Sinkadus, but everyone turns in at least a more-than-decent contribution. This album ranks among the best ones in the series, just behind the three volumes of Spaghetti Epic. And it’s a crash course in modern progressive rock bands.

Back to this sound art record based on field recordings in the backyards of Berlin buildings. (Find my initial comment here.) A strong record that manages to create a dreamy outlook on spaves that basically have nothing poetic about them. Nice play on spatial distances and depths. That said, it’s a demanding listen; as soon as your attention drifts off, the music blends into the background. However, it only takes a small mental effort to tug it back to the fore.
