Ce fut une grosse semaine, bourrée de nouveautés, et je n’avais plus grand attention à consacrer aujourd’hui. Tout de même deux nouvelles écoutes, avant de mettre iTunes en mode aléatoire et de me consacrer à 100% au boulot.

It’s been a big week of new releases, and honestly, I’m all listened out. Still managed to squeeze two new CDs before firing up iTunes on random mode and turning all my attention to work.

FINN. / The Best Low-Priced Heartbreakers You Can Own (Erased Tapes - Forced Exposure)

Et si Leonard Cohen avait eu la voix de Jónsi Birgisson de Sigur Ros? Non, ce n’est pas une blague, et à peine une exagération. Patrick Zimmer (l’homme derrière Finn.) a cette voix haut perchée et traînante qui fait la marque de commerce du groupe islandais, mais il écrit des chansons folk douce-amère qui rappellent effectivement celles de Cohen. Ce disque est un album concept, en quelque sorte, aux chansons reliées par des intermèdes instrumentaux qui font penser à (et auxquels participe) Olafúr Arnalds. C’est doux, c’est beau, c’est mélancolique à souhait. Et il y a là une écriture de qualité. [Ci-dessous: deux chansons du disque, interprétées en spectacle en novembre 2008. Enregistrement amateur.]

What if Leonard Cohen had had the voice of Sigur Ros’s Jónsi Birgisson? No, it’s not a joke, and hardly an exaggeration. Patrick Zimmer (the man behind Finn.) has that high-pitched whining voice that has become the Icelandic band’s trademark, and he does write sweet-and-sour folk songs reminiscent of Cohen’s. This record is a concept album of sorts, with songs tied together by instrumental interludes that bring to mind (and actually feature) Olafúr Arnalds. It’s soft, it’s nice, it’s delightfully melancholic. And it’s quality songwriting. [Below: Two songs from the album, performed live in November 2008. Amateur recording.]

BEING & TIME / Being & Time (Musea Parallele / Intermusic)

Un duo japonais qui se prétend “the next best thing” depuis la vague de rock progressif britannique. Un gros bof. Du progressif instrumental de multi-instrumentiste (batterie programmée), bien torché mais sans voie précise, amalgame d’influences prog et fusion. Quelques moments musclés, une pièce copiée-collée de King Crimson, et le reste passe vite.

A Japanese duo claming to be the next best thing since the heydays British prog rock. What a larf! This is multi-instrumantlists’ instrumental prog rock with programmed drums. Well done, but no real direction, a bunch of obvious prog and fusion influences. Some strong moments, and a copy-paste out of King Crimson’s songbook, but the rest goes by quickly and unnoticed.
