Réédition en disque double des deux albums du supertrio d’électronica expérimentale constitué de Fennesz, Jim O’Rourke et Peter Rehberg (Pita). Quasi révolutionnaire à l’époque, maintes fois imitée depuis, cette une musique qui a bien vieilli, somme toute. The Magic Sound Of... était construit sur des échantillons de musique pop parfois incongrus (Gentle Giant!?!), aux accents musak qui contrastaient avec la “glitch” très avant-gardiste dans laquelle ils étaient remoulés. The Return Of... fait plus bruitiste et chaotique. Chaque disque est augmenté d’une pièce bonie. [Ci-dessous: “Fenn O’Berg Theme”, extrait de la version originale (avec pochette originale) de The Magic Of.... La nouvelle version est remastérisée.

Reissue as a 2-CD set of the two albums by this experimental electronica supergroup consisting of Fennesz, Jim O’Rourke, and Peter Rehberg (Pita). Near revolutionnary in the late ‘90s, often copied since, this is music that ages well, overall. The Magic Sound Of... was mostly made of pop music samples, some of them rather incongruous (Gentle Giant!?!), with a strong muzak musk that created a sharp contrast with the highly experimental “glitch” esthetics in which they were recast. The Return Of... is noisier and more chaotic. Each disc boasts one bonus track. [Below: “Fenn O’Berg Theme” from the original version (with original artwork) of The Magic Of... Progression by Failure est le projet d’un seul homme, Nicolas Piveteau. Ce premier disque souffre pleinement du syndrome du multi-instrumentaliste: synthétique, clinique, rien de spontané dans cet alignement méticuleux de pistes multiples. Malheureusement, ce disque souffre aussi d’un autre problème commun à bien des projets de rock progressif instrumental: une certain vacuité qui donne constamment l’impression qu’il manque quelque chose d’essentiel à la musique entendue: une voix principale ou un instrument soliste. Cela dit, certains thèmes sont bien jolis.

Progression by Failure is the project of a single man, one Nicolas Piveteau. This album suffers across the board from the multi-instrumentalist’s syndrome: synthetic-sounding, clinical, nothing spontaneous about this careful stack of multitracks. Sadly, the record also suffers from another common issue among instrumental prog rock projects: a certain void in the writing that gives you the impression that there is always a key element missing, like a lead vocal or a soloing instrument. That being said, some themes are very pretty.

Court premier disque de ce projet de Justin Lockey, qui promet une trilogie de mini-albums. The British Expeditionary Force fait dans la chanson folktronique à relents post-rock. C’est bien tourné mais un peu froid et prévisible. C’est agréable mais ça se fond dans le décor. [Ci-dessous: La “bande annonce” de l’album.]

The short debut by Justin Lockey’s project, chapter one in a planned series of three Eps. The British Expeditionary Force is about folktronica songwriting with a post-rock feel. It’s well done, but a bit cold and predictable. Enjoyable, but it quickly fades into the background. [Below: The album’s official “trailer”]

ROGÉRIO BIGUDO & SEAN BERGIN / Mixing It (Pingo Records - merci à/thanks to ToonDist)

Un deuxième disque pour ce duo inattendu, rencontre entre le guitariste acoustique brésilien Rogério Bigudo et le saxophoniste néerlandais d’origine sud-africaine Sean Bergin. Un amalgame de folklore brésilien, de jazz sud-africain et d’improvisation. Le duo interprète des pièces originales et des compositions de Jobim, Villa-Lobos et Dollar Brand, ce qui donne une idée de l’étrange palette musicale de ce disque. Chaleureux, sans prétention et trop court!

A second CD for this unexpected pairing between Brazilian acoustic guitarist Rogério Bigudo and South-Africa-born (now residing in The Netherlands) saxman Sean Bergin. A blend of Brazilian folk, South-African jazz, and improvisation. The pair performs originals and compositions by Jobim, Villa-Lobos, and Dollar Brand, which gives a pretty good idea of the stylistic scope of this release. It’s warm, unpretentious... and too short!
