MARIO DE VEGA / Live at Next Festival, Bratislava, Slovakia (Acheulian Handaxe)
Un set très sympatique d’un joueur de tourne-disque modifiés et d’électroniques, enregistré devant public en Slovaquie. Court (33 minutes) mais vivant, citationniste mais sophistiqué, sans jamais tomber dans la culture DJ. De Vega me fait beaucoup penser à Philippe Petit.
A very enjoyable set by an artist playing modified turntables and electronics. Recorded live in Slovakia. Short (33 minutes) but lively, quote-heavy yet sophisticated, and never stooping to cheap Djing tricks. De Vega makes me think of Philippe Petit.
Un autre solide projet signé Heddy Boubaker. Ce quintette d’improvisation libre le voit au saxo alto, aux flûtes et autres instruments hétéroclites, entouré du percussionniste Fabien Duscombs, de la vocaliste Françoise Guerlin, du trompettiste Piero Pépin et du bassiste et guitariste électrique Marc Perrenoud. Night Asylum propose sept impros (malgré que la pochette en annonce neuf) entre 2 et 15 minutes. Ça bouillonne là-dedans! Au diable les techniques étendues, ici il s’agit de torcher en groupe, en y mettant de la conviction et un peu d’humour. Très belle synergie. “Don’t Look Down” m’a épaté. Another strong project signed Heddy Boubaker. This free improvisation quintet sees him playing alto sax, flutes and various other instruments, surrounding by drummer Fabien Duscombs, vocalist Françoise Guerlin, trumpeter Piero Pépin, and electric bassist/guitarist Marc Perrenoud. Night Asylum features seven improvisations (though the cover states there should be nine), between 2 and 15 minutes in duration. Ebullient music! Extended techniques have been thrown out in favour of scorching group playing, with lors of conviction and a dash of humour. Wonderful synergy. KOJI ASANO / Solstice Eclipse (Solstice)
Une nouvelle œuvre longue de Koji Asano, presque vieille manière puisqu’elle me rappelle The Last Shade of Evening Falls. Mi-paysage sonore, mi-composition, démarrée et interrompue brutalement en plein déroulement. Note tenue à évolution mcrotonale, pénible, soundscape entendu à travers deux mètres de coton, piano (peut-être?), guitare électrique en finale (presque certain), beaucoup de transformation au cours de 47 minutes qui sont néanmoins monotones. C’est peut-être le son qui est éclipsé - la guitare devient très présente, presque choquante tellement elle est non équivoque à la fin, tout le reste demeurant occulté. Ouf.
A new long-form piece from Koji Asano, almost old-school for him since he reminds me a lot of The Last Shade of Evening Falls. Half-soundscape, half-composition, starts and stops abruptly in the middle of something. Held notes evolving in painful microtonal sines, soundscapes heard as through six feet of wool, piano (perhaps?), electric guitar in the finale (almost sure), lots of transformation in the course of 47 minutes, yet the piece sounds monotone and monolithic. Maybe what gets eclipsed here is sound itself – the guitar grows very much present in the final moments, almost shocking in its unequivocality, everything else in here being occulted.
