IN GOWAN RING / The Twin Trees (Shayo)

Je devais commencer à travailler très tôt ce matin et j’avais besoin de quelque chose de doux et calme. La solution: un retour vers In Gowan Ring, splendide projet de folk gothique/médiéval expérimental. The Twin Trees n’est pas le meilleur IGR (ce titre est réservé au splendide Hazel Steps Through a Weathered Home), mais il représente tout de même un point fort. La voix est moins présente ici, plus de place aux instrumentales. Mais de très belles instrumentales, avec un côté “New Weird America” dans le mixage, beaucoup d’instruments antiques (le psaltérion) et de percussions de main. Et une merveilleuse atmosphère d’introspection, de méditation, de douleur sourde, d’amour blessé.

I had to start working VERY early this morning, and I needed something soft and quiet. The solution: going back to In Gowan Ring, a splendid gothic/medieval experimental folk project. The Twin Trees may not be their best album (that title is claimed by Hazel Steps Through a Weathered Home), but it is still a highwater mark. Less vocals, more instrumentals, and very nice ones too, with a “New Weird America” feel in the mixing, lots of early music instruments (psaltery) and hand percussion. And a wonderful atmosphere of inner-searching, meditation, quiet sorrow, and and painful loving.

VALERIO TRICOLI & THOMAS ANKERSMIT / Forma II (Pan - merci à/thanks to Dense Promotion)

Malgré le titre, première collaboration entre Valerio Tricoli de 3/4HadBeenEliminated et le saxophoniste Thomas Ankersmit. Forma II consiste en cinq pièces électroacoustiques. Le premier travaille surtout ses sources par des moyens analogiques, le second par l’ordinateur. Des pièces bien équilibrées, riches en rebondissement, mais sans chercher à étourdir ou à survolter. La dernière, “Takht-e Tâvus”, transforme le saxo en cornemuse d’une manière un peu trop insistante, mais les autres pièces ont beaucoup à offrir.

Despite the title, this is the first collaboration between Valerio Tricoli of 3/4HadBeenEliminated and saxophonist Thomas Ankersmit. Forma II consists in five electroacoustic pieces. Tricoli mostly works his sound sources using analog means, while Ankersmit is a laptop guy. Well-balanced tracks, eventful without trying to overload your ears. The final track, “Takht-e Tâvus” turns the saxophone into bagpipes in a way that gets too insistent, but the other pieces have a lot to offer.

ALEXANDER RISHAUG / Shadow of Events (Dekorder - merci à/thanks to Dense Promotion)

Un très beau disque d’électronique expérimentale ambiante. Rishaug est norvégien, ex-membre de ARM. Ceci est son troisième album solo. Rêveur, texturé, tout à fait dans l’esprit des productions des étiquettes 12k et Room40. Peut passer inaperçu si on l’écoute distraitement, mais il récompense l’immersion.

A very fin record of ambient experimental music. Rishaug is from Norway and was in the ARM collective. This is his third solo effort. Dreamy, textured, perfectly in tune with the productions of labels like 12k and Room40. Can easily fly by unnoticed on a distracted listen, but fully rewards an immersive one.
