ALEXANDER FRANGENHEIM / The Knife Again (Creative Sources)
I recently reviewed a record from Creative Sources by a trio consisting of Günter Christmann, Elke Schipper and this doublebassist, Alexander Frangenheim. The Knife Again, released roughly at the same time, features him in 17 short solo pieces. Peter Kowald is an obvious infulence. Nice playing, especially when he focuses on harmonics, very light bow strokes, and microtonal glissandi.

OTHER DIMENSIONS IN MUSIC FEAT. FAY VICTOR / Kaiso Stories (Silkheart)
Very fine collaboration between superior free jazz group Other Dimensions in Music (Roy Campbell, Daniel Carter, William Parker, Charles Down) and avant-jazz singer Fay Victor, whom I’m very fond of. For Kaiso Stories, Fay dug deep into her roots in Trinidad and Tobago and came up with a handful of traditional songs to reinvent. What we have here is a blend of Carabbean melodies and swinging, fluid, occasionally ecstatic free jazz. Fay Victor is gifted with a beautiful voice and doesn’t hesitate to make bold and free things with it. This project is a complete success and a wonderful opportunity to discover this singer.

ANNE-JAMES CHATON / Événements 09 (Raster-Noton - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)
Sound poet Anne-James Chaton (who has worked with The Ex, Andy Moor, and Alva Noto) has just added nine “events’ to his series of compositions based on newspaper headlines. Each piece follows the same formula: a print headline is sampled and looped, and Chaton reads the article underneath it. Out of the headline a beat is born, out of the text a litany. The headline itself comes back, naked, at regular intervals, serving as a chorus. This is very interesting idea is simple but the delivery is stupefying (hypnotic, deadpan, getting close to the art of beatboxing), but, applied so systematically for a whole album, it gets tiresome.
