Même si je n’ai pas terminé l’écoute de ce coffret, j’ai décidé d’en parler tout de suite. Il s’agit d’un très bel ouvrage de cinq CD présentant des œuvres d’artistes qui ont été boursiers du New York Foundation for the Arts au cours des 25 dernières années. Une corne d’abondance de musiques créatives, avec de grands noms et de jeunes artistes. J’aime particulièrement l’idée d’opter pour cinq petits livrets au lieu d’une grosse brochure. J’ai écouté les deux premiers disques et j’en retiens particulièrement les pièces d’Annie Gosfield, de Bruce Gremo (très belle pièce pour shakuhachi et électroniques), Joel Chadabe (une pièce pour theremin géant), Robert Dick, et Eric John Eigner (une pièce pour robinet, jouée sur une tuyauterie d’appartement vraiment TRÈS particulière). Beaucoup de bonne musique provocante et songée.

I’m not done listening to this five-CD set, but I want to write a word on it right now. It’s a fine set featuring works by artists who have received fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts over the past 25 years. A cornucopia of new music, with some major names and newcomers. I am particularly fond of the five separate booklets (instead of one big brochure). I have listened to the first two discs and my highlights so far have been the contributions by Annie Gosfield, Bruce Gremo (a beautiful piece for shakuhachi and electronics), Joel Chadabe (a piece for oversized theremin), Robert Dick, and Eric John Eigner (a piece for faucet, played on some very unique appartment piping). Lots of good thought-provoking music.

JON IRABAGON / Foxy (Hot Cup Records - merci à/thanks to Braithwate & Katz Communications)

La pochette annonçait le pire (pitoune sur la plage, accessoires gonflables), mais ce n’était qu’un déguisement, un trompe-l’œil pour leurrer l’amateur de jazz. Malgré la douzaine de titres comme “Foxy”, “Chicken Poxy” et “Biloxi”, on trouve sur Foxy une improvisation free jazz continue, particulièrement relevée, mettant en vedette le saxo ténor Jon Irabagon, le bassiste Peter Brendler et le batteur Barry Altschul. Bravo donc pour le concept de la pochette, mais bravo encore plus pour 78 minutes de jazz fumant qui n’a rien de factice ou de raccoleur.

The cover had me prepared for the worst – bikini girl on the beach, inflatable accessories), but it was a decoy to lure in cheesy jazz affiocionados. Despite the presence of a dozen tracks entitled “Foxy”, “Chicken Poxy”, “Biloxi” and the likes, Foxy consists of a single 78-minute free jazz improvisation, quite eventful, featuring tenor saxman Jon Irabagon, bassist Peter Brendler and drummer Barry Altschul. So bravo for the cover design, and bravo moreso for this slab of smoking jazz – and rest assured there’s nothing fake or cheesy about it.

VARIABLE DENSITY SOUND ORCHESTRA / Sound Particle 47 (Creative Nation Music - merci à/thanks to Improvised Communications)

Un bon second disque pour le guitariste Garrison Fewell et son Variable Density Sound Orchestra, un ensemble de neuf jazzmen qui fait dans le canevas d’improvisation et le jazz actuel. Quatre instrumentistes à vents (dont Roy Campbell Jr. et Steve Swell), quatre instrumentistes à cordes (dont Fewell et Eric Hofbauer aux guitares) et un batteur. Un bon son d’ensemble, de jolis thèmes (et pas seulement de Fewell; Hofbauer, Campbell et Swell contribuent; John Tchicai aussi), une belle réalisation. Pas marquant, mais je compte réécouter - ça pourrait devenir addictif.

A good second opus for guitarist Garrison Fewell’s Variable Density Sound Orchestra, a nine-piece ensemble playing structured improvisations and avant-jazz compositions. Four winds (among them Roy Campbell Jr. and Steve Swell), four string instrumentalists (including Fewell and Eric Hofbauer on guitars), and a drummer. Good band balance, nice themes (not all Fewell’s; Hofbauer, Campbell and Swell contribute; John Tchicai too), fine production. Not remarkable, although I intend to listen again - Sound Particle 47 could become addictive.
