EDOARDO MARRAFFA & NICOLA GUAZZALOCA / Glück Auf (Setola Di Maiale)

A very intense free improvisation session between saxman Edoardo Marraffa and pianist Nicola Guazzaloca. Recorded in September 2007. Entirely acoustic, but noisy and raucous, with a tendency to confront instead of dialogue. I like Guazzaloca’s playing - he is agile and creative - but this record is not entirely convincing. I find it a bit one-dimensional. Still, some good moments.

TIM TREVOR-BRISCOE & NICOLA GUAZZALOCA / One Hot Afternoon (Leo Records)

I am mature enough to admit it when I am wrong. Well, when I reviewed a quintet CD on Amirani Records featuring Nicola Guazzaloca, I wrote that it was the first time I’d heard him. I was wrong. Since then, Nicola sent me a few records (including the one reviewed above) and, among them, was this 2007 Leo Records release, which I had completely forgotten. But that was not my only erring. You see, that record, One Hot Afternnon, hadn’t made an impression on me. Listening to it again today, I’m seriously wondering why, because it’s excellent. This is another sax/piano duo, but un like the Marraffa/Guazzaloca CD above, this duo is working partially with compositions, and there is a splendid level of telephathy and exchange between them. This is a captivating record, with short punchy tracks. Ear candy.

PAOLO ANGELI & HAMID DRAKE / Uotha (Nu Bop)

A duo recording released in 2005. Paolo Angeli’s latest album (Tibi, a CD+DVD) has gotten me heads over heels. This live recording is also excellent, with something magical happening between Angeli (prepared Sardinian guitar) and Hamid Drake (percussion, vocals). Drake sings on two or three numbers, and that’s when sparks start flying. An easy listen, a record so human, warm and moving.

A project led by 4/3 de Trio guitarist Guillaume Fenoy. Two electric guitars, electric bass, and drums. Instrumental progressive metal vested in overlaying odd rhythm and riff cells to form polyrhythmic chyclical patthers. Rather well done (makes me think of Italian band Lento), especially early in the album (the two-part “Génération addict”). Then, it winds down. Or more accurately, it gets monotonous and I run out of breath.

ABACUS / Destiny (Musea)

Not bad, this new Abacus, but too “arena rock” for me. It wants to be progressive, it sounds too much like Journey or Kansas for me. Still, “Destiny” is pretty nice with its preacher and choir. And “The Fight” is a decent mini-epic track.
