NICK HOLMES / Soulful Crooner (Riverman Music - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)

Hmm. Je ne connais rien de Nick Holmes, qui a tout de même une carrière bien remplie. Ce premier album solo, d’abord paru en 1973, est ici réédité officiellement pour la première fois (l’artiste a participé au remastering et fourni des pièces boni). C’est de la soul bluesée, avec une touche jazzée. Holmes a une voix quelque part entre Cat Stevens et Shawn Phillips, très agréable, et certaines chansons sont bien réussies (“Oh Picasso,” “The Promise Suite”). Mais ce n’est pas du grand art. Notons la présence de Tony Levin à la basse, à l’époque où il faisait beaucoup de contrats de studio.

Hmm. I don’t know this Nick Holmes, but he seems to have had a rather busy career. This, his debut solo album from 1973, gets its first official reissue (the artist was involved in the remastering and supplied bonus tracks). It’s bluesy soul music with a hint of jazz. Holmes’ voice falls somewhere between Cat Stevens and Shawn Phillips, quite enjoyable per se, and some of the songs are well written (“Oh Picasso,” “The Promise Suite”). But it’s not great. King Crimson-spotters will be interested to know that bassist Tony Levin is on here - this dates from the period where he did a lot of on-call studio gigs.

IGE*TIMER - Ice Cold Pop (Everest Records - merci à/thanks to Dense Promotion)

Ige*timer est un duo: le contrebassiste Klaus Janek (aussi aux électroniques) et Simon Berz aux électroniques et dispositifs maison. Un vinyle d’improvisation bruitiste et crue, de longues pièces aux subtilités camouflées par l’aspect revêche de la contrebasse manipulée numériquement. Pas facile et peu engageant, somme toute. J’ai entendu mieux de la part de Janek.

Ige*timer is a duo consisting of doublebassist Klaus Janek (also on laptop) and Simon Berz on home-made electronics and devices. An LP of noisy and crude free improvisation, long pieces whose detailes are buried inside the rough exterior of a digitally-trated bass. Not easy, not really engaging. I have heard better from Janek.

TAPE TUM / The Night We Called It A Day (Kimi Records - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)

Un duo belge dont ceci est le premier album. Une pop indie fort sympathique, avec un bon apport en textures bruitistes, de belles tendances expérimentales. Ça fait beaucoup penser à certains artistes sous étiquette Tapete, tout particulièrement Jack Beauregard. Voix discrètes, ambiances floues, beaucoup d’électronica, mais une musique bien “groundée”.

A Belgian duo, this is their debut album. Very good indie pop with a strong contribution from noisy textures and pretty experimental leanings. It makes me think of some of the acts signed on Tapete Records, especially Jack Beauregard (although noisier). Quiet voices, shady atmospheres, lots of electronica, though the music is well grounded.

PHILIPPE PETIT / Henry: The Iron Man (Beta-lactam Ring Records)

Paru l’an dernier, enregistré “live” en studio en mai 2008, Henry: The Iron Man est l’album le plus “solo” à ce jour de Philippe Petit, lui qui s’entoure habituellement de nombreux collaborateurs sur disque. Ici, on remarque seulement la présence du saxo Perceval Bellone (de Strings of Consciousness) sur deux des trois pièces et l’utilisation d’échantillons chinois fournis par FM3 sur l’autre. Un disque plus ambiant que la musique des SoC, une musique qui procède avec lenteur mais qui multiplie les couches, les boucles et les textures. Très immersif, captivant dans “Salaryman’s Dream”, perd de sa dynamique et s’étire en longueur dans “Lady in the Radiator Meets the Fetishist.” [Ci-dessous: Un extrait de “Salaryman’s Dream” trouvé sur le site de BLRR.]

Released last year, recorded live in the studio in May 2008, Henry: The Iron Man is Philippe Petit’s most solo “solo” album to date – the man usually surrounds himself with collaborators on record. For this one, there’s only Strings of Consciousness’ Perceval Bellone (sax) on two of the three tracks, and Chinese samples provided by FM3 on the other one. More ambient than SoC, the music unfolds slowly through several layers, loops and textures. Highly immersive and captivating in “Salaryman’s Dream”, but it looses some of its momentum and drags on in “Lady in the Radiator Meets the Fetishist.” [Below: An excerpt of “Salaryman’s Dream” found on BLRR’s website.]

OSIRIS / Tales of the Divers (Musea)

Originaire de Baihrein, Osiris a été l’un des rares groupes de rock progressif arabe. Écrit et joué sur scène en 1985, Tales of the Divers n’a jamais été endisqué. Voici que, pour rendre hommage au bassiste maintenant disparu, on publie un enregistrement en concert de cet “album” concept. Six musiciens plus un ensemble rythmique traditionnel, dans une œuvre qui mélange musique arabe et progressif planant de type Pink Floyd, autour du thème des pêcheurs de perle. Pas mal du tout, malgré la qualité sonore “réchappée” d’une bande en mauvais état.

Hailing from Bahrein, Osiris was one of the rare Arab prog rock bands. Written and presented on stage in 1985, Tales of the Divers was never recorded in the studio. And now, as a tribute to the band’s bassist, now deceased, here is a live recording of this concept “album”. Six musicians on stage plus a traditional rhythm band, in a work blending Arab music and Pink Floyd-type trippy progressive rock, around the theme of pearl divers. Not bad at all, despite the shaky sound of a salvaged 8-track tape.

Dans la collection Les Zutopistes paraît cette compilation regroupant des chansons d’artistes français inclassables, surtout associés au rock-in-opposition et à la musique de jouet. Au menu: une inédite d’Albert Marcœur, une poignée de courtes vignettes inédites signées Joseph Racaille, et des pièces récupérées d’albums d’Etron Fou Leloublan, Ferdinand Richard, Toupidek Limonade, Klimperei, David Fenech et Frédéric Le Junter. Dadaïste, déglingué, merveilleusement ridicule!

In the Les Zutopistes collection, Gazul releases a compilation of songs by unclassifiable French artists mostly associated with Rock-in-Opposition and toy music. The tracklist includes a previously unreleased song by Albert Marcœur, a handful of unreleased vignettes by Joseph Racaille, and tracks culled from albums by Etron Fou Leloublan, Ferdinand Richard, Toupidek Limonade, Kliperei, David Fenech, and Frédéric Le Junter. Dada, walloping, and marvelously ridiculous!
