2010-05-19: Plaistow, Pago Libre, RJ Valeo, Nonplace 10th Anniversary

Journal d'écoute / Listening Diary

PLAISTOW / The Crow (Unit Records / Insubordinations)

Here’s a mighty fine trio. The press release labels them as “post-jazz” and, well, it sticks. Piano, bass, drums, from Switzerland, an avant-jazz basis, a strong post-rock influence, a bass leaning toward doom metal. In the quiet tracks, I hear Bohren und der Club of Gore (especially in the lengthy “Boomerang” that disintegrates halfway through). In the upbeat tracks, I hear… what am I hearing, actually? Satoko Fujii? With a hint of Pago Libre? Hard to tell, but it’s nicely melodious while remaining relevant. A rather easy listen, although jazz fans will be confused. And fans of confusion (yes, like myself) will be satisfied.

PAGO LIBRE / Fake Folk (Zappel Music)

[Ci-dessous: La pièce d’ouverture de l’album, “In a Gaelic Mood”, en concert l’an dernier (vidéo amateure).

You can count on Pago Libre to turn in an enjoyable, sexy, funny, moving CD. That’s what Fake Folk has to offer - that and another step on the constant evolution of this venerable modern jazz ensemble. A jazz that always had a dab of traditional folk and world music (free) inspiration, along with a touch of classicism (Arkady Shilkloper’s French horn, an anomaly in jazz). This time around, Georg Breinschmid holds the doublebass alongside Shilkloper, Tscho Theissing (violin) and John Wolf Brennan (piano), all long-time members. Let’s also note the presence of drummer Patrice Héral (of Triangulation, another of Brennan’s quartets) on two tracks. Is Pago Libre a bit bourgeois? Yes, but I don’t intend to rob myself of the pleasure it brings me. Elegant and fanciful, this group is synonymous with creativity and quality. RJ VALEO / Atman (IO Records - merci à/thanks to: John Bourke P.R.)

Enjoyable electronica that integrates experimental textures with Kosmiche Musik’s legacy and chill electronica. Rather original though not groundbreaking. Honestly, it went down like a glass of water, unremarkable but definitely not unpleasant.

ARTISTES VARIÉS-VARIOUS ARTISTS / Nonplace 10th Anniversary Edition (Nonplace - merci à/thanks to: John Bourke P.R.)

Burnt Friedman’s label Nonplace turns 10, and here’s the compilation album to celebrate that landmark. I’m not all that familiar with its catalog, but what I hear here is a very cohesive playlist of remixed tracks from Friedman’s various guises and projects (solo, Friedman & Liebezeit, Flanger with Atom™), plus Hayden Chisholm’s group The Embassadors. Laid-back electro-jazz and electro-dub. Sweet and blissful.
