JB FLOYD, THOMAS BUCKNER & GEORGE MARSH / In Crossing the Busy Street (Mutable Music)

This CD by composer/pianist JB Floyd is twofold. First, a cycle of eight songs, 22 minutes, performed by baritone Tom Buckner and Floyd at the piano, based on poems by Daniel Abdal-Hayy Moore. Elegant, beautiful, rapturing, and imbued with that slightly austere grace I have come to associate with Buckner. Then follows a string of improvisations around the musical themes of the suite, 38 minutes in all, featuring Floyd and drummer George Marsh. Gone is the “lieder” feel of the first part, replaced by a slightly amorphous, complacent form of jazz. Had Buckner participated to that part (he’s a talented improviser), it may have been less bland and predictable.

There are two aspects to this record I should discuss. First, the music: doublebass solos recorded in studio and in nature. Viltard masters a good range of extended techniques that allow him to explore the whole range of the instrument’s sonic possibilities (some of which sounded new to my ears). His music is not particularly moving, but it stimulates the mind. Now, the object: Running Away is the first release on Un Rêve Nu, a label involved in art editions. The CD is packaged between two slabs of stratified wood, 19x14 cm, smooth on the inside faces where the cover and notes are printed, rough on the outside faces, which have been hand-painted. The pieces of wood are held together by four magnets. A unique design, marvelously executed. [Below: You can download the whole album for free in FLAC format. There is also a few photos of the object at this link.]

This would be the best fusion jazz record of 2009, except that it’s not quite fusion jazz. Then again, that’s what makes it the best fusion jazz record of 2009! Lost? Let’s say that Manifest Density is the missing link between fusion jazz and RIO... At least, that’s the best image I can find. Intelligently written, brilliantly executed, with gusto and just enough good sense.

2e écoute/2nd listen: ARTISTES VARIÉS-VARIOUS ARTISTS / The Electric Asylum, Volume 3 (Past & Present - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)

Preparing for tonight’s Delire Musical. This is a good comp, somewhat lighter than Volume 1, though driven by a nice streak of madness. Not that rock though. Read a more detailed comment at my diary entry from 2009-09-08.

2e écoute/2nd listen: FLAMING TUNES / Flaming Tunes (Life and Living Records - merci à/thanks to ReR Megacorp)

Un “labour of love”.

Wonderful. An album as beautiful and fragile as the arts&crafts work of a young child, delicate as the wings of a butterfly. A true labour of love. If you want to know what I’m talking about, go back to my diary entry from 2009-09-07.

POSITIVE CATASTROPHE / Garabatos Volume One (Cuneiform)

Finally acquired this CD, an ambitious project that won’t let you down! This is a collaboration between cornet player Taylor Ho Bynum (Anthony Braxton’s protege) and alterno-latino percussionist Abraham Gomez-Delgado (of Zemog and Gallo Bueno). A fun tentet, some great avant-big band. Two pieces are dedicated to Sun and Fred Ho, which sums up pretty well the style and mood of these recordings. Okay, I’m ready for Volume 2!
