MORAINE / Manifest Density (Moonjune)

Quelques éléments font ressortir et Moraine et leur premier disque. L’instrumentation d’abord: guitare électrique, violon, violoncelle, basse électrique et batterie – donc, un quatuor à cordes avec batterie. Ensuite, tous les membres du groupe (sauf le batteur) composent. Enfin, la musique de ce groupe de Seattle offre un hybride inhabituel entre jazz-rock aventureux et rock-in-opposition. Difficile de comparer à un autre groupe, ce qui en soi est énorme. Une musique un peu technique, mais inventive, relativement accessible ou du moins pas intimidante, mais très riche. A few things make Seattle’s Moraine and their first CD stand out. First, the instrumentation: electric guitar, electric bass, violin, cello, drums – or a strings quartet with drums. Second, all group members (except the drummer) are contributing compositions. Finally, the music is an unusual hybrid of adventurous jazz-rock and rock-in-opposition. I can’t find another band to compare them to – and that’s huge. The music is a bit technical but inventive, relatively accessible, or at least non intimidating. And rich. Oh, so rich. Bravo. CHARLIE / Kitchens of Distinction (Voiceprint)

Charlie était un groupe rock des années 70 et 80 - jamais entendu parler, mais ils ont eu quelques hits, semble-t-il. Reformation récente sous l’égide du chanteur-guitariste Terry Wilson, entouré de nouveaux venus. Kitchens of Distinction (quel titre risible!) est un disque correct, solide même, d’un point de vue rock. On s’attendrait à quelque chose de passéiste, mais non, les chansons sont arrangés avec du cran et une influence de rock moderne. Cela dit, certaines chansons sont TRÈS prévisibles, voire mièvres, mais quelques-unes ont du chien. C’est tout simplement trop ordinaire pour mon goût personnel.

Charlie was a rock group from the ‘70s and ‘80s – never heard of ‘em, but they’re supposed to have had hits. Recently reformed by singer/guitarist Terry Wilson, supported by new guys. Kitchens of Distinction (what a terrible title!) is a fine record, you might even call it strong by mainstream rock standards. I was excepting something more passé but, surprise, the songs are gutsy and have a modern rock component. That said, they remains EXTREMELY predictable, though a couple have balls. However, it’s simply too ordinary for my personal tastes.

TRISTAN HONSINGER & MASSIMO SIMONINI / Call Me Us (I Dischi di Angelica - merci à/thanks to ReR Megacorp)

Quel beau disque étrange! Une collaboration hors-norme entre le violoncelliste Tristan Honsinger et Massimo Simonini aux disques, CD et bandes. Il s’agit presque d’un hörspiel, un collage sonore fait d’ambiances, de citations, de bribes de musique au violoncelle, le tout lié par un dialogue entre les deux protagonistes, l’un s’exprimant en anglais, l’autre en italien, on dirait deux monologues décousus s’entrecroisant. Le tout pendant plus de 70 minutes. C’est un peu long, mais l’ambiance doucement dadaïste est tranquillement jouissive.

What a strange record! A unorthodox collaboration between cellist Tristan Honsigner and Massimo Simonini playing records, CDs, and tapes. It’s akin to a hörspiel, a sound collage of ambiances, quotes, bits of cello music, all tied together by an ongoing dialog between the two musicians, one speaking in English, the other in Italian, like two criss-crossing monoogues in fact. For 70 minutes. It gets a bit long, but the softly Dada mood is quietly thrilling.
