JOÃO LUCAS / Abstract Mechanics (Creative Sources)

Une musique écrite pour la chorégraphie “It was a very abstract thing” d’Andresa Soares.

Music written for Andresa Soares’ choreography “It was a very abstract thing.” Music focused on improvisation, although there is a canvas, and even entirely scored bits it seems. João Lucas plays piano, accordion and (light and occasional) electronics; Miguel Mira on cello. The music focuses on the deep-running interplay between Lucas (mostly at the piano) and Mira. Non-idiomatic music charged with emotion and busy with motion, with a slight touch of tango surfacging here and there.

HARBINGER / Second Coming (Guerssen Records - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)

Dave Bixby’s second LP, recorded immediately after Ode to Quetzalcoatl (see my diary entry on 2009-07-01. Again, it’s loner/downer psychedelic folk. If Quetzalcoatl was about soul searching, Second Coming is more clearly about religion. In fact, the guru Don DeGraaf acted as producer on this album, highjacking Bixby’s music for a project tied to his cult. Still, a lot of honesty and incertitude in the lyrics, and some songs are moving, but I find this effort weaker than the first. On the other hand, the sound is better.

KRK / Acouasm (Acheulian Handaxe)

A short recod (half an hour) but a strong record of electroacoustic improvisation, featuring George Cremaschi’s doublebass (also using analog electronics) being digitally manipulated by Matthew Ostrowski. Deep but frenetic music that makes me think of the stype developed by the duo Furt. There’s finesse, but no near-silent contemplation of what could be done. These two go straight to the heart of the matter.

SKAKKAMANAGE / All Over the Face (Kimi Records - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)

I’m not impressed with this Icelandic group – this is their second full-length. It’s indie pop/rock, occasionally noisy, but lacking sincerity and excitement. Very ordinary. Orvar Smárason of múm makes a guest appearance on harmonica, and that’s the highlight of the album.
