Premier “livre” d’une série
annoncée intitulée “Sound is my shelter”, dans laquelle Claudio Paroti compte
consacrer un disque à chaque instrument à vent dont il joue. Heavy Nichel met en vedette sa
clarinette turque. Quatre solos de 12 à 18 minutes où Paroti explore la
tessiture et l’expressivité de l’instrument à travers des techniques étendues
et orthodoxes. C’est évidemment très pointu comme travail; intéressant, bien
senti, mais pointu et, tout compte fait, monotone.
The first “book” is a series entitled “Sound is my shelter,” where
Claudio Paroti intends to devote one album to each wind instrument he plays. Heavy Nichel
features his Turkish clarinet. Four solos, 12 to 18 minutes each, where Paroti
explores the range and expressiveness of the instrument using extended and
orthodox techniques. It’s obviously very focused work; interesting, artistic,
but pinpoint-focused and, in the end, monotonous.
Un disque surprise dans le flot de
parutions d’Ivo Perelman ces dernières années: une session en duo avec le
pianiste Karl Berger, qu’il n’avait jamais seulement rencontré en personne
avant d’arriver en studio. Et ça donne un album tout en douceur, une douceur
aigre-douce évidemment, mais exempte du feu ardent et des émotions à fleur de
peau caractéristiques de Perelman. Ce changement fait du bien; il permet au
saxophoniste de tisser un discours plus nuancé cette fois. Et la magie opère,
les deux improvisateurs se découvrant rapidement de belles affinités.
A surprise record among the flurry of releases from Ivo Perelman: a duo
session with pianist Karl Berger, whom he hadn’t even met in person before both
of them entered the studio. And the result is a sweet record, sweet and sour of
course, but without the searing fire and overwhelming emotions so closely
associated with Perelman’s music. It’s a welcome change of pace that allows the
sax player to weave a more nuanced discourse this time. And the magic is at
work, as the improvisers quickly find mutual affinities.

Un groupe néerlandais: chanteuse,
deux guitares, basse, batterie. Rock indé aux accents punk et noise. Défoulant,
sympa, mais plutôt simpliste. La chanteuse, Gwendolien, développe une
personnalité aguichante-agressive qui rappelle la chanteuse de Duchess Says.
Or, à force de vouloir être un peu tout (un peu pop, rock, punk, no-wave), ces
chansons manquent de caractère.
A Dutch band: female singer, two guitars, bass, drums. Indie rock with
punk and noise elements. Nice release, fun, but simplistic. The singer,
Gwendolien, is broadcasting a seductive/aggressive personality reminiscent of
Duchess Says’ singer. However, this album is trying so much to be a little of
everything all at once (a little bit pop, rock, punk, no-wave) that it fails to
develop character.
