GŁOWICKA & WALENTYNOWICZ / Red Sun (Bôlt/ARTEksounds - merci à/thanks to Dense Promotion)

Red Sun est un CD réunissant des œuvres de Kasia Głowicka pour piano et ordinateur, interprétées par la pianiste Małgorzata Walentynowicz. La musique de Głowicka est essentiellement méditative, faite de fragments mélodies rêveurs et de réverbérances enveloppantes. Ça devient un peu monotone à la longue, bien qu’agréable. J’ai décroché au cours de “Presence”, 18 minutes austères.

Red Sun is a CD of works for piano and computer by Kasia Głowicka, performed by pianist Małgorzata Walentynowicz. Głowicka’s music is mostly meditative and consists of dreamy melodic fragments and immersive reverberances. Things get monotonous with time, though it’s mostly an enjoyable listen. However, my interest did falter during “Presence“, 18 austere minutes.

LUFTH / Distanz und Nähe (Oktaf - merci à/thanks to Dense Promotion)

Électronica ambiante métissée de dub, jolie mais sans caractère, très ordinaire. Une déception.

Ambient electronica with dub leanings, pretty but lacks in character, very run-of-the-mill. A disappointment.

JASON VAN GULICK / Entelechy (Idiosyncratics - merci à/thanks to Dense Promotion)

Solide, très solide album du batteur Jason Van Gulick, enregistré dans des lieux riches en écho: virtuosité, textures abstraites, jeu free, trucs très structurés aussi. Le tout passe comme une flèche, en tout cas certainement plus vite que ses 28 minutes officielles. [CI-dessous: Un montage d’extraits.]

Strong, very strong solo debut by drummer Jason Van Gulick, recorded in resonant venues: virtuoso playing, abstract textures, free playing, some highly structured stuff too. And all this goes by in much less time than its official 28 minutes of duration. [Below: A few excerpts.]

XAVI REIJA / Resolution (Moonjune)

L’étiquette Moonjune a la fibre internationale. Après avoir établi un solide canal de communication avec l’Indonésie (Topahti, Dewa Budjana), voilà qu’elle s’intéresse à la scène catalane. Après un disque du guitariste Dusan Jevtovic, voici le batteur Xavi Reija dans un solide album en power trio, avec Jevtovic et le bassiste Bernat Hernández. Resolution est plus satisfaisant que Am I Walking Wrong? de Jevtovic; la musique qu’il présente est plus distinctive, plus personnelle. Et elle repose sur une écriture enjouée et prône au risque. Chose intéressante: Reija et Hernández forment une section rythmique particulièrement musicale, mélodique, ce qui permet à Jevtovic de foncer dans la guitare texturale au lieu d’enchaîner les solos. Bref, un jazz-rock convaincant qui a de la gueule.

The Moonjune label loves to get international. After establishing a strong channel of communication with Indonesia (Topahti, Dewa Budjana), it is now scouting the Catalan territory for talent. After a CD by guitarist Dusan Jevtonic, here comes drummer Xavi Reija with a strong power trio set featuring Jevtovic and bassist Bernat Hernández. Resolution is more satisfying than Jevtovic’s Am I Walking Wrong?; the music is more personal, more distinctive. It is inhabited by playful, risk-prone writing. And, an interesting quirk, Reija and Hernández form a rhythm section so musical, so melodious, that it allows Jevtovic to dive into abstract, textural guitar playing instead of just stringing solos together. Resolution is a convincing jazz-rock opus with character.

THE GHOST OF A SABER TOOTH TIGER / Midnight Sun (Chimera Music – merci à/thanks to HIM Media)

Ce groupe, qu’on appelle aussi The Gooast, est le duo de Sean Lennon et Charlotte Kemp Muhl. Leur nouvel opus, Midnight Sun, sort le 28 avril. C’est un petit bijou de pop psychédélique. Le groupe est passé en mode électrique et vintage, on entend PARTOUT l’influence des Beatles, la voix de Sean n’a jamais autant évoqué celle de son illustre père, mais surtout l’écriture est d’une efficacité redoutable et les arrangements me plaisent beaucoup. Les moments forts abondent à la première écoute et se confirment à la seconde. [Ci-dessous: Vidéo officielle pour “Animals”.]

This band, also known as The Gooast, is Sean Lennon and Charlotte Kemp Muhl’s duo project. Their new opus Midnight Sun drops April 28. This is a gem of a psychedelic pop album. The band has gone electric and vintage, the influence of The Beatles can be heard EVERYWHERE, and Sean’s voice never sounded so alike to his illustrious father’s, but most of all the songwriting is effective as hell, and I really like the arrangements.
