ANTONIO BERTONI / 1/2 h(our) drama (Leo Records)

Un solo de contrebasse de 36 minutes. Point à la ligne. Un solo féroce, où Bertoni ne cesse d’enchaîner les petits coups d’archet rapides, étourdissant de vitesse. Comme un solo du pianiste Borah Bergman.

A 36-minute contrabass solo. Period. A ferocious solo where Bertoni never stops playing short arco stabs in rapid succession – dizzying speed. Like a solo by pianist Borah Bergman.

MATTHIAS SCHUBERT & SIMON NABATOV / Descriptions (Leo Records)

Premier disque en duo de Matthias Schubert (saxo ténor) et Simon Nabatov (piano), mais ils se fréquentent depuis 30 ans. Enregistré au LOFT à Cologne en mai 2012, ce set touche à toutes les cordes de ces deux musiciens: énergie, tendresse, jazz, improvisation non idiomatique. Les pièces plus courtes sont les plus réussies, et la finale “Accordance” nous ramène délicatement sur terre.

This is the first duo album between Matthias Schubert (tenor sax) and Simon Nabatov (piano), but they have known each other for 30 years. Recorded at the LOFT in Cologne in May 2012, this set covers pretty much the whole range of both musicians: energy, delicateness, jazzy tendencies, non idiomatic improvisation. The shorter tracks are the best ones, and the finale “Accordance” gently brings us back to earth.

VLADY BYSTROV, ANTO PETT & ANNE-LIIS POLL / The Enchanted 3 (Leo Records)

Le saxophoniste russe Vlady Bystrov et deux tiers du Free Tallin Trio d’Estonie, soit le pianiste Anto Pett et l’extraordinaire vocaliste Anne-Liis Poll. Une session d’improvisation libre enlevante. Intéressant d’entendre Poll dans un contexte dénué de toute référence au jazz – elle s’en tire à merveille, déployant des trésors d’énergie, devenant parfois très aggressive. Bystrov trouve sa place après quelques tentatives peu concluantes (Pett et Poll forment une entité tissée serrée), puis le concert prend son envol. La finale “Enchanted” passe de presque rien à un état furieux en sept minutes, avant de se calmer pour conclure par un soubresaut. Recommandé. [Ci-dessous: Un court extrait de l’album.]

Russian sax player Vlady Bystrov and two thirds of the Free Tallin Trio from Estonia, i.e. pianist Anto Pett and vocalist extraordinaire Anne-Liis Poll. A thrilling free improvisation sessions. Interesting to hear Poll in a context devoid of any jazz reference – she pulls it off with flying colours, deploying incredible levels of energy, even turning very aggressive at times. Bystrov has some trouble finding his place at first (Pett and Poll form a tightly-knit unit), but he eventually does and the concert takes off. The final piece, “Enchanted,” goes from near nothing to full-on blast in seven minutes, before boiling down to conclude with a final outburst. Recommended. [Below: A short sample of the album.]

SPRILLS OF ORE / Time Mirrors (Kendra Steiner Editions)

Court CDr (28 minutes) de Sprills of Ore, soit Eva Kelly à la boîte à rythme, aux boucles de guitare et à la voix. Morceaux courts clairement édités de pièces plus longues – Kelly nous offre le résultat et non le processus d’accumulation de boucles. Très lo-fi, mais des idées intéressantes, surtout lorsque la voix entre en jeu. Ça me rappelle les premiers albums solo d’Aidan Baker.

Short CDr (28 minutes) by Sprills of Ore, i.e. Eva Kelly on beatbox, guitar loops and ethereal vocals. Short tracks clearly edited from longer pieces – Kelly gives us only the result of the loop-accretion process. Very lo-fi, but some interesting ideas, especially when her voice comes to play. Reminds me of Aidan Baker’s early solo albums.

TOM CREAN / Wired Love (Kendra Steiner Editions)

Solide petit CDr du guitariste Tom Crean, ancien disciple d’Anthony Braxton. Wired Love propose des compositions et des improvisations à la guitare et au banjo, dans une forme qui s’inspire du jazz et du bluegrass, tout en regardant vers l’avant. Ça me fait parfois penser à Eugene Chadbourne (dans les titres aussi, comme “Dirty People Running Around Looking for ‘Shrooms”). Un disque bien dosé entre écriture et improvisation, mélodie et passages bruitistes (“Improvisations Based Upon Sounds That May or May Not Occur in a Foot Locker Commercial”). Attention: ce CDr et le précédent sont édités à 123 exemplaires.

A strong short CDr from guitarist Tom Crean, who used to be a pupil of Anthony Braxton. Wired Love features compositions and improvisations on guitar and banjo, in a form that draws from jazz and bluegrass but looks forward, avant-garde style. It makes me think of Eugene Chadbourne (the music, the banjo, but also the track titles, like “Dirty People Running Around Looking for ‘Shrooms”). This record is well-balanced between writing and improvising, melody and noisy bits (“Improvisations Based Upon Sounds That May or May Not Occur in a Foot Locker Commercial”). Note: this CDr and the one above are released in editions of only 123 copies.
