ARTISTES VARIÉS-VARIOUS ARTISTS / Jazzwerkstatt Bern Live 2012 (Unit Records)
This record features excerpts from the performances presented at the 2012 edition of the festival put together by the musicians’ collective Jazzwerkstatt Bern. A fine selection of often bold music ranging from jazz big band to electronics duo. Several highlights, and the bands I already knew are represented by their strongest material, especially Kamikaze and a live version of the great song “Herons” (the highlight of their latest CD), and the Ghost Town Trio with their cover of “Bohemian Rhapsody”). I should also mention a thrilling duet between singer Andreas Schaerer and guitarist Anton Goudsmit, plus a quiet and very nice improvisation on prepared piano (Vera Kappeler) and small percussion (Peter Conradin Zumthor). And for a compilation album, this CD holds well, with tight segues and a thought-out tracklist.

LIAM SINGER / Arc Iris (Hidden Shoal Recordings – merci à/thanks to Dense Promotion)
Sympa.
Fourth album from English artist Liam Singer, but this is the first one I hear. Chamber pop, slightly experimental, with simple melodies and less simple arrangements, and a tendency to hijack the song format. Arc Iris remains an easy listen, just slightly out of phase with normal expectations (think early Sufjan Stevens or Garrett Dickson).

BABI / Botanical (Noble - merci à/thanks to Dense Promotion)
[Ci-dessous: “Passiflora”.]
Second album by Babi, a Japanese artist who, says the press release, starting composing at age 2 and studying composition at age 5. Hmm… Notwithstanding, Botanical is a charming CD of askewed Japanese pop. A highly personal style arises from it, and it blends naïve pop, classical music (in the arrangements), and experimental pop. I can hear similarities with Tujiko Noriko, Mika, Haco, and, outside of Japan, Björk and Deerhoof. There is also a strong filiation with the Noble roster, especially Serph. A sunny record that hides strong songwriting under its light demeanour. And it’s really cute. Recommended.  [Below: “Passiflora.”]

NATIONAL JAZZ TRIO OF SCOTLAND / Standards Vol. II (Karaoke Kalk)
Bill Wells likes to run expectations astray. The National Jazz Trio of Scotland plays pop songs, not jazz. And it’snot a trio, but a duo (singer Lorna Gilfedder and Wells on piano/guitar/samples). I won’t even look up if they’re from Scotland or not. However, Standards Vol. II is indeed their second album… but there are no standards on it. Just simple original songs, a bit disillusioned, a bit absurd too, and quite kitsch. Stripped-down songs delivered in a lacklustre way and often sung in a flat voice. But it all works out well. Funny, and touching at times. And strangely antiquated.

ARTISTES VARIÉS-VARIOUS ARTISTS / Though the Darkness Gathers: Spirituals by Guido Möbius remixed (Karaoke Kalk)
Strange. Okay, so Guido Möbius’s Spirituals is a quite unusual and disturbing record, but I’m surprised to find that this album of remixes sounds more… normal… than the original. Eight tracks covering a vast territory, from minimal techno (Senking) to a pastoral remix by Daniel Padden (of Volcano the Bear). Among the other remixers, Jason Forrest and Candie Hank turn in interesting takes on the material. But I have ambivalent feelings about this album, and the original.
