MAGIMC / Polishing the Mirror (Amirani Records)

MAGIMC est un trio de free jazz composé du pianiste américain Thollem McDonas (dans un rôle plus conventionnel que ce que j’ai entendu de lui précédemment) et des Italiens Edoardo Marraffa (saxo) et Stefano Giust (percussions). Un set improvisé devant public, très vif, puissant, interactions rapides, souffle créatif soutenu, sans être pour autant remarquable.

MAGIMC is a free jazz trio consisting of US pianist Thollem McDonas (in a more conventional role than what I have previously heard from him) and Italian musicians Edoardo Marraffa (sax) and Stefano Giust (percussion). A freely improvised live set, very lively, powerful, with quick interactions, and sustained creativity, although not exactly remarkable.

GOAT’S NOTES / Fuzzy Wonder (Leo Records)

Un solide groupe moscovite qui mélange improvisation libre et composition, en mode acoustique: violon, clarinette, trombone, piano, contrebasse, batterie. Des pièces courtes et punchées, imagées. Une folie très bien canalisée. Un sextette à l’identité bien définie et aux idées nombreuses.

A strong group from Moscow, blending free improvisation and composition, acoustic style: violin, clarinet, trombone, piano, doublebass, drums. Short and punchy pieces with a vivid imagery. Well-channeled wildness. This sextet has a well-defined character and isn’t short on ideas.

AIDAN BAKER / Aneira (Glacial Movements - merci à/thanks to John Bourke P.R.)

Aidan Baker (Nadja, ARC) publie coup sur coup deux disques. Le premier, Aneira, sort le 25 mars chez Glacial Movements. Il s’adapte parfaitement à l’esthétique de cette étiquette: longue pièce ambiante et polaire, aux longues résonances (une guitare 12 cordes est à l’origine des textures), aux translations lentes. Pas particulièrement original, mais fignolé et réussi.

Aidan Baker (Nadja, ARC) is releasing two albums near-simultaneously. The first one, Aneira, comes out March 25 on Glacial Movements. It is perfectly adaptated to that label’s aesthetics: a long ambiant, polar piece, with long resonances (a 12-string guitar is behind the textures) and slow translations. Not particularly original, but carefully chiselled and artistically successful.

AIDAN BAKER / Already Drowning (Gizeh Records)

Et voici le deuxième de ces deux nouvelles parutions d’Aidan. Et là, on sort de l’ordinaire (d’Aidan, s’entend), avec un projet de... chansons. Oui! Sept chansons (six à 11 minutes), huit chanteurs (il y a un duo), dont les participations de Clara Engel, Jessica Bailiff, Geneviève Castrée et Carla Bozulich. Évidemment, “chanson” dans l’univers d’Aidan Baker, ça rime avec noirceur, spleen et désillusion. Chanson doom donc, avec relents gothiques et post-rock, sur lit d’ambiant. En fait, j’ai l’impression que pour Already Drowning, Baker a décidé de synthétiser tous ses intérêts, toutes les facettes de son travail. C’est souvent long, mais tout de même poignant, avec les pièces chantées par Engel (“Already Drowning”), Castrée (“Tout juste sous la surface, je guette”) et Bozulich (“Lorelei/Common Tongue”) qui forment les hauts faits de ce disque inattendu.  [Ci-dessous: “Already Drowning” avec Clara Engel.]

And here is the second new opus from Aidan. And this one steps out of the ordinary (Aidan’s ordinary, of course). You see, it’s a songs project. Really! Seven songs (6 to 11 minutes), and eight singers (yep, there’s one duet), among them Clara Engel, Jessica Bailiff, Geneviève Castrée, and Carla Bozulich. Of course, “song” in Aidan Baker’s world rhymes with darkness, spleen, and disillusion. So these are doom songs, with a taste of goth rock and post-rock, served on a bed of ambient. Actually, it sounds like Baker decided to bring together all his interests, all the facets of his work in Already Drowning. It’s often longish, but still poignant, and the highlights of this unexpected record are found in the songs sung by Engel (“Already Drowning”), Castrée (“Tout juste sous la surface, je guette”), and Bozulich (“Lorelei/Comon Tongue”).  [Below: “Already Drowning” feat.
