JUSTIN DEHART / Strange Paths (Innova)

Innova consacre un disque complet au percussionniste de musique contemporaine Justin DeHart. Celui-ci a concocté un programme relevé composé de deux “classiques” des percussions et de deux œuvres plus récentes. Le “Psappha” de Xenakis est interprété avec intelligence, calme et circonspection – il en paraît presque simple, à côté du “Bone Alphabet” de Brian Ferneyhough, à la complexité rythmique étourdissante. “XY” de Michael Gordon part du principe d’indépendance des deux bras du percussionniste pour développer un intéressant “duo pour un”. Seule la suite pour vibraphone “They Looked Like Strangers” de Stuart Saunders Smith m’a laissé sur ma fin – longue et hermétique.

Innova devotes a full CD to contemporary music percussionist Justin DeHart, who has prepared a strong program consisting of two “classic” percussion pieces and two more recent works. Xenakis’s “Psappha” is performed with intelligence, calm, and attention to detail – it almost sounds simple compared to Brian Ferneyhough’s “Bone Alphabet,” of dizzying rhythmical complexity. Michael Gordon’s “XY” develops, out of the principle of limb independence, an interesting “duo for one.” The only disappointing work here is Stuart Saunders Smith’s vibraphone suite “They Looked Like Strangers,” which is very long and hermetic.

ENSEMBLE U: / Protuberances: New Music to Ensemble U: (ind.)

Ensemble U: est un sextuor estonien de musique contemporaine. Cinq œuvres au programme, dont quatre de compositeurs scandinaves et “changing light” de Benjamin Broening, qui reçoit ici une lecture... agréable et soignée, mais je préfère l’interprétation d’Eighth Blackbird (sur le disque Trembling Air). Des autres œuvres, le point fort est “TripleDuos” de Kimmo Kuitunen, un jeu d’interrelations entre instruments qui, malgré sa complexité, réussit à dépasser son cadre mathématique pour atteindre l’inspiration.

Ensemble U: is an Estonian contemporary music sextet. Five works here, including four from Scandinavian/East-European composers, plus Benjamin Broening’s “changing light”, here given an enjoyable and perfected reading, although I do prefer the performance by Eighth Blackbird on the CD Trembling Air). Of the other works, the highlight is Kimmo Kuitunen’s “TripleDuos,” a set of interrelations between instruments that manages to overcome its complex mathematical framework to achieve inspiration.

MARBIN / Last Chapter of Dreaming (Moonjune)

Je suis partagé. Ce deuxième opus de Marbin chez Moonjune est riche – en pièces (14), en styles (beaucoup) et en invités (percussionnistes, bassiste, trompettiste, claviéristes, chanteurs) – et pourtant il me laisse sur ma faim. Et il semble que pour chaque pièce punchée, on a droit à un contrepoids mièvre. Les bons moments sont bons, mais c’est un disque inégal à première écoute. Je compte lui donner une deuxième chance.

I’m uncertain. This second Marbin opus on Moonjune is rich – in tracks (14), in styles (many), and in guests (percussionists, bassist, trumpeter, keyboardists, singers) – and yet it leaves me unsatisfied. And it seems that for each strong track there’s cheesy one coming. The good moments are good, but it’s an uneven record on first listen. I will give it a second chance though.
