LOL COXHILL / Spectral Soprano (Emanem)

Ce matin, j’apprends le décès de Lol Coxhill. J’avais récemment appris qu’il était très malade depuis plusieurs semaines. Alors pour faire revivre un peu ce très grand musicien aux multiples talents, je ressors cette compilation double qui couvre l’ensemble de sa carrière, du rockabilly à The Damned, en passant par toutes sortes de projets d’improvisation libre. The first thing I learned when I turned on my computer this morning is that Lol Coxhill passed away last night. I very recently was informed that he had been very sick for several weeks. So, in honour of this great multifacetted artist, I took off the shelf this double CD compilation that covers his whole career, from his rockabilly beginnings to The Damned and a slew of free improvisation projects. IVO PERELMAN with SIRIUS QUARTET / The Passion According to G.H. (Leo Records)

À ma connaissance, ceci est le premier enregistrement du saxophoniste Ivo Perelman avec un quatuor à cordes depuis The Alexander Suite, sa collaboration avec le C.T. String Quartet. Le Sirius Quartet de Ron Lawrence est passé maître dans l’art de s’adapter à tous les contextes, qu’il s’agisse de musique contemporaine, d’improvisation libre ou d’improvisation dirigée (on se souviendra d’Ereia avec le groupe avant-prog Doctor Nerve). The Passion According to G.H. est une suite improvisée vive, bouillante, étonnante par la complexité des interactions entre les musiciens. Le courant passe vraiment bien tout au long des 50 minutes. Recommandé.

To my knowledge, this is sax player Ivo Perelman’s first recording with a string quartet since The Alexander Suite, his collaboration with the C.T. String Quartet. Ron Lawrence’s Sirius Quartet is well versed in the art of adapting to any context, be it contemporary music, free improvisation, or conduction (remember Ereia with avant-prog band Doctor Nerve). The Passion According to G.H. is a lively, ebullient freely improvised suite, with a surprising level of complex interplay between the musicians. Something really clicked between Perelman and the string players, and it shows throughout the 50 minutes of music. Recommended.
