URUMCHI / Nar(r) (Leo Records)
This quartet has been around for a long while. Nar(r) is a new studio recording. Twelve short improvised songs featuring the bewitching voice of Saadet Türköz alonside Hans Hassler’s accordion, Alfred Zimmerlin’s cello, and the often very delicate percussion work of Fredy Studer. Hymns and laments drawing from actual (Turkestan) traditional music and imaginary folk. There’s fine interplay between the musicians, but Türköz’s voice is so magnetic that you have to make a big effort to notice the other improvisers.

ALEXANDRA GRIMAL QUARTET / Andromeda (Ayler Records)
The French-American Jazz Exchange program allowed French sax player Alexandra Grimal to go to New York where she recorded Andromeda with Todd Neufeld on electric & acoustic guitars, bassist Thomas Morgan, and drummer Tyshawn Sorey. A highly talented line-up that proves to be a perfect fit for her quiet and nuanced compositions. “Cassiopée” and “Andromeda” border on minimalism, to an extent that I thought of Polwechsel while listening to them. That being said, Grimal’s music never get THAT conceptual and cold. A melody – however minimal or stretched-out – always remains. It’s beautiful and fascinating at times, and it’s also bold and new.
