MCCORMICk PERCUSSION GROUP / Concerti for Strings with Percussion Orchestra (Ravello Records)

Pour son troisième album chez Ravello, le McCormick Percussion Group propose un programme d’œuvres pour instrument à cordes soliste et percussions.Les œuvres de Balhinder Sekhon, Stuart Saunders Smith, David Liptak, Michael Sidney Timpson et Daniel Adams font appel à toute la famille principale des cordes, plus le zheng chinois. D’ailleurs, c’est “Dongxidonxi” de Timpson qui ressort le plus du lot – son approche est nettement moins occidentale. Les autres compositions tendent à se fondre les unes dans les autres, quoique “Camouflage for Contrabass and Percussion Trio” d’Adams réussise à présenter un langage musical différent et des jeux texturaux réussis entre le bourdon de la contrebasse et les interventions pointues des percussions.

For their third album on Ravello Records, the McCormick Percussion Group present a program of works for solo string instrument and percussions. The works by Balhinder Sekhon, Stuart Saunders Smith, David Liptak, Michael Sidney Timpson et Daniel Adams use the whole main family of string instruments, plus the Chinese zheng. Incidentally, Timpson’s “Dongxidongxi” (featuring that instrument) is the composition that stands out – his approach steps out of the Western ways. The other compositions tend to all sound the same, although Adams’ “Camouflage for Contrabass and Percussion Trio” manages to develop a different musical language and features successful textural interplay between the contrabass’s drone and the percussion’s more incisive interventions.

Le centre d’artistes espagnol Störung célèbre six ans d’activité avec cette très belle compilation sur DVD avec livre de biographies et de photos. Le DVD (stéréo, 46 minutes) propose onze collaborations entre artistes visuels et sonores. Musique électronique expérimentale allant du pointillisme techno minimaliste au drone sirupeux. Vidéo expérimentale, surtout numérique, avec ou sans interface croisée avec la musique. Parmi les électroniciens en présence: Alan Courtis, Francisco López, Kim Cascone, Andy Guhl et Simon Whetham. The Spanish artist-run centre Störung celebrates six years of operations with this gorgeous compilation DVD and book (containing bios and photos). The DVD (stereo, 46 minutes) features 11 collaborations between visual and sound artists. Experimental electronic music ranging from the pointillistic traits of minimal techno to heavy droning. Experimental video, mostly of the digital kind, with or without an interface with the music. Among the sound artists on this comp: Alan Courtis, Francisco López, Kim Cascone, Andy Guhl, and Simon Whetham. COPERNICUS / Live! In Prague (Nevermore)

Le sac du FIMAV. Au FIMAV, j’ai vu Copernicus dans une petite salle d’une centaine de personnes - et il en restait moins d’une cinquantaine à la fin. Sur ce DVD d’un concert à Prague en 1989, ils sont 9000 à applaudir. Mais c’est un tout autre Copernicus. Celui des débuts, celui qui crache sur les autorités, celui qui parle de sang, de bombe atomique, des diktats de l’argent, du racisme. Celui qui se donnait en spectacle accompagné de quatre musiciens, en mode rock star. (Celui qui j’ai vu était en mode performance théâtrale, tout à fait différent). Sur Live! In Prague, Copernicus déploie une énergie féroce et c’est un très bon set, malgré les interventions épouvantablement exagérées du guitariste-claviériste-chanteur Larry Kirwan. Par contre, le DVD tire sa source d’une vieille bande VHS, alors la qualité vidéo est correcte mais sans plus. Il y a même une bande de mauvais “tracking” au bas de l’écran tout au long du film.

The FIMAV haul. At FIMAV, I saw Copernicus in a small hall with of one hundred - and there were less in 50 of us left by the end of the performance. On this DVD filmed at a concert in Prague in 1989, they are 9,000 strong cheering him on. But that’s a totally different Copernicus – the early Copernicus who spat at the authorities and talked about blood, bombs, the rule of money, and racism. The Copernicus who performed on stage with four musicians, in full rock star mode. (The one I saw was in theatrical performance-art mode). On Live! In Prague, Copernicus is ferociously energetic, and it’s a very good set, despite the terribly exaggerated interventions from guitarist/keyboardist/singer larry Kirwan. However, this DVD reissue seems to have been sourced from a VSH tape, so the quality of the video is disappointing. There’s even a strip of “bad tracking” at the bottom of the screen throughout the film.
