JOËLLE LÉANDRE, FRED FRITH, ALVIN CURRAN & URS LEIMGRUBER / MMM Quartet Live at the Metz’ Arsenal (Leo Records)

Joëlle Léandre a travaillé étroitement avec Fred Frith et Alvin Curran lorsqu’elle enseignait au Mills College, dans la première moitié des années 2000. Pour ce concert enregistré en novembre 2009, elle a invité le saxophoniste Urs Leimgruber (qu’elle côtoyait déjà dans Quartet Noir) à se joindre au trio. MMM Quartet Live at the Metz’ Arsenal est un set d’improvisation mesurée, à la qualité d’écoute admirable. Rien à redire. Les électroniques de Curran (dont des échantillons sonores) jouent le rôle du facteur déstabilisant qui garde la longue improvisation initiale aux aguets.

Joëlle Léandre has worked a lot with Fred Frith and Alvin Curran when she taught at the Mills College in the early-to-mid 2000s. For this concert from November 2009, she invited saxman and fellow Quartet Noir member Urs Leimgruber to join the trio. MMM Quartet live at the Metz’ Arsenal is thoughtfully-paced set of free improvisation featuring an admirable level of listening. I have nothing to criticize. Curran’s electronics (including sound samples) play the role of the destabilizing factor, keeping the long initial improvisation on its toes.

L’étiquette du saxophoniste-globetrotteur George Haslam vient de publier un très bon document d’archive, soit un concert enregistré en Finlande en 1999, avec lui-même, le tromboniste Paul Rutherford (aujourd’hui décédé) et un trio de free jazz finlandais (piano, basse, batterie). Une improvisation collective continue de 53 minutes aux accents parfois très jazzés, avec de beaux enchaînements de solos et jeux de présence (chaque musicien cédant de la place ici, en prenant plus là). Et une belle synergie entre les deux souffleurs.

Sax player/globetrotter George Haslam’s record label has just released a very good archive document, a live set from Finland, 1999, featuring himself, the late trombonist Paul Rutherford, and a Finnish trio (piano, bass, drums). A continuous 53-minute collective improvisation with strong jazz influences and fine presence plays (each musician granting more room to others here, stepping more into the spotlight there). And an enjoyable interplay between Haslam and Rutherford.

MOONSUN CHRISTOPHE SCHWEIZER / Opus (Unit Records)

Un disque sympathique du tromboniste Christophe Schweizer et son quintette de jazz. Un jazz moderne fort agréable, accessible et mélodique en surface, complexe en réalité, presque progressif en fait, avec de longues pièces qui développent. Cela dit, sans que ça ne m’ait particulièrement marqué. Je tenterai une seconde écoute pour voir si ça m’accorchera plus.

A fine and enjoyable record by trombonist Christophe Schweizer and his modern jazz quintet. Fun, accessible, melodic jazz on the surface, but it’s complex music actually, almost progressive in fact, with long fully-developing tracks. However, it didn’t leave a particularly strong mark on first listen. I’ll try a second spin later this week to see if I warm up to it.
