4TET - DIFFERENT SONG / Step in to the Future (Leo Records)
Ce quatuor consiste en trois jazzmen/improvisateurs
suisses (Michel Wintsch au piano, le bassiste Bänz Oester et le batteur Norbert
Pfammatter) entourant la joueuse de pipa/guqin Yang Jing. Step in to the
Future est leur premier disque, mais ils travaillent
ensemble depuis un bon moment. Tous les membres du groupe (sauf le batteur)
contribuent des compositions, qui consistent en splendides mélanges de
traditions, de périodes et d’approches – de “Café longtemps d’Oester, où le
jazz français se mélange au pipa, jusqu’à “Water Lily” de Jing, dominée par un
motif de piano à doubles croches rappellant le minimalisme américain. On trouve
aussi quelques improvisations libres. Du jazz entre deux mondes, bien écrit,
original, inusité et surtout très délicat dans l’ensemble.
This quartet consists of Swiss improvising jazzmen
Michel Wintsch (piano), Bänz Oester (doublebass) and Norbert Pfammatter (drums)
surrounding Chinese pipa/guqin player Yang Jing. Step in to the
Future is their first release, but they have been working together for a
while. All band members save Pfammatter contribute compositions, which consist
of beautiful blends of traditions, eras and approaches – from Oester’s French
jazz-inflected “Café longtemps” being subdued to the pipa, to Jing’s “Water
Lily” featuring a continuous 16th-note piano motif evoking American
minimalism. There are also group free improvisations. In-between jazz, well
written, original, unusual, and overall very delicate.

L’altiste Szilárd Mezei propose un nouveau disque chez
SLAM Productions, un nouveau sous-groupe de son grand ensemble, enregistré au
Loft de Cologne en juin 2010. L’ensemble propose un mélange de cuivres et de
cordes, incluant tuba et contrebasse, plus batterie. Des compositions fouillées
comme à l’habitude, avec un peu plus de jazz qu’à l’habitude, plus de moments
qui swingent et qui jovialisent. Mais le pathos n’est jamais loin et
l’improvisation libre occupe encore une place importante dans ces longues
pièces (presque toutes dans les 10 minutes et plus). Une proposition solide.
Violist Szilárd Mezei is back with a new record on
SLAM Productions recorded at the Loft in Köln, June 2010, and featuring yet
another sub-grouping of his large ensemble. This line-up features brass and
string instruments, including tuba AND doublebass, plus a drummer.
Sophisticated compositions as usual, with a bit more jazz infused in them –
more swinging and cheery moments than usual. However, pathos is never far away,
and free improvisation still holds a key part in these long pieces (almost all
in the 10+minute range). A strong proposition.
Troisième album du percussionniste-producteur Sven
Kacirek, dont j’ai bien aimé le dernier opus The Kenya Sessions. Scarlet
Pitch Dreams est bien différent - exit les collaborations
africaines. Ce disque est plus recentré sur les percussions de Kacirek, avec
beaucoup de pistes fines et de marimbas, plus quelques invités, dont le
contrebassiste John Echardt et la chanteuse Jana Plewa. Une musique
électronique aux fondements très acoustiques, ce qui offre une approche
différente. Très chill, léger fond WorldBeat, mais dans une
atmosphère qui lui est propre. Très agréable. Sur les tablettes dès la semaine

Third album from percussionist/producer Sven
Kacirek, whose latest opus The Kenya Sessions I really liked. Scarlet
Pitch Dreams is a different beast though - no more African collaborations.
This record focuses a lot more on Kacirek and his percussion work – lots of
finely-detailed tracks, and lots of marimbas. A handful of guests, including
doublebassist John Eckhard and singer Jana Plewa. Electronic music with strong
acoustic foundations, for a very different approach. Ambient, slightly
WorldBeat driven, but in a mood all its own. Quite enjoyable. Out next week. [Below: Official music video for the

THE LEGENDARY PINK DOTS / The French Collection (Beta-lactam Ring Records)
Nous sommes en 1994, 9 Lives to Wonder vient
de paraître et les Legendary Pink Dots préparent une tournée française qui comportera,
entre autres, une résidence parisienne de trois soirs. Pour l’occasion, le
groupe répète beaucoup plus de matériel, question d’offrir au public trois
soirées entièrement différentes. The French Collection
propose deux heures et demie, soit 22 chansons interprétées pendant cette
tournée. Le répertoire couvre tout: du tout premier album (“Breakday”) jusqu’au
plus récent (“Hotel Z”, “Nine Shades to the Circle”, “A Crack in Melancholy
Time”). On a droit à plusieurs classiques, comme “Fifteen Flies in the
Marmalade, “Love in a Plain Brown Envelope” et “Aarzhklahh Olgevezh”, mais
aussi à des raretés comme “Siren”, “Tower 2” et “Premonition 13”. Le son est
excellent, le line-up est classique (Silverman, Van Hoorn, de Kleer, Moore,
Steeg, Ka-Spel) et le groupe est au sommet de son art. Un must pour les fans

The year is 1994, 9 lives to Wonder
has just been released, and The Legendary Pink Dots are about to embark on a
French tour that will include a three-night residency in Paris. For this
occasion, The LPD have rehearsed many more songs than usual, in the hope of
presenting three completely different programs. The French
Collection features two and a half hours, i.e. 22 songs performed during that
tour. The repertoire covers... everything: from Ancient Daze
(“Breakday”) up to the then-current album (“Hotel Z”, “Nine Shades to the
Circle”, “A Crack in Melancholy Time”). We are treated to several classics like
“Fifteen Flies in the Marmalade,” “Love in a Plain Brown Envelope” and
“Aarzhklahh Olgevezh,” but also rarities such as “Siren,” “Tower 2” and
“Premonition 13.” Sound is excellent, the line-up is classic (Silverman, Van
Hoorn, de Kleer, Moore, Steeg, Ka-Spel), and the band is in top shape. A must-have
