SIMON NABATOV / Spinning Songs of Herbie Nichols (Leo Records)

J’avoue ne pas connaître le répertoire de Herbie Nichols, un pianiste noir américain des années 40-50. Mais j’entends dans les interprétations de Simon Nabatov beaucoup de liberté et de créativité. Je crois arriver, pour la majeure partie, à faire la part des choses entre ce qui vient de Nichols et ce qui vient de Nabatov. De toute manière, j’aime ce que j’entends sur Spinning Songs of Herbie Nichols: un jazz très personnel, un peu sauvage, qui rappelle l’univers de Monk.

I admit not being acquainted with the repertoire of Herbie Nichols, an Afro-American pianist from the ‘40s/’50s. However, I hear lots of freedom and creativity in Simon Nabatov’s solo piano interpretations. I think I can distinguish, for the most part, what belongs to Nichols and what comes from Nabatov. In any case, I like what I’m hearing here: highly personal jazz, slightly wild, reminiscent of Monk’s universe.

RAYMOND BONI / Welcome (Émouvance)

Un disque solo du guitariste français Raymond Boni, qui s’adonne aussi à l’harmonica sur ce disque. Un disque très varié qui démarre sur une version très aérienne de “Welcome” de Coltrane (harmonica avec délai et reverb, notes de guitare électrique sans attaque), puis passe à la guitare acoustique, fait un tour en mer (sérieusement, harmonica sur le terrain), avant de terminer sur une version de “Black is the Colour of My True Love’s Hair” dans la nature. Au final, ce projet – bien qu’il soit très personnel, c’est évident – ne lève pas à mes oreilles.

A solo record from French guitarist Raymond Boni, also playing harmonica on these recordings. A very diverse record that kicks off with an aerial reading of Coltrane’s “Welcome” (harmonica with delay and reverb, attack-less electric guitar notes), then switches to acoustic guitar, goes out to see (seriously, field-recorded harmonica), before concluding on a version of “Black is the Colour of My True Love’s Hair” recorded in nature. Despite it’s highly personal nature, this project fails to take off, in my opinion.

TRIO M / The Guest House (Enja/Yellow Bird - merci à/thanks to Braithwate & Katz Communications)

Trio M réunit la pianiste Myra Melford, le contrebassiste Mark Dresser et le batteur Matt Wilson dans un trio de jazz partagé équitablement. Tous trois composent pour le groupe. Un jazz actuel qui coule de source, simple en apparence mais plein d’idées audacieuses. Une écoute fort agréable.

Trio M brings together pianist Myra Melford, bassist Mark Dresser, and drummer Matt Wilson in a shared jazz trio. All three contribute compositions. Easy-flowing modern jazz, simple on the surface, full of bold ideas underneath. Quite an enjoyable listen.
