LINDA JOZEFOWSKI / For My Dead Folks (Unit Records)

Pas joyeux comme titre, et pourtant ce disque propose un jazz vif et parfois complexe. La flûtiste Linda Jozefowski mène ici un quatuor à la palette instrumentale très intéressante, où le vibraphone (Jean-Lou Treboux) remplace le piano. À l’écriture, on croit presque reconnaître parfois la patte de Moe Kofmann, même si le jeu de Jozefowski est plus fluide et nuancé.

Not a sunny title, right? And yet, this CD contains some vivid and at times complex jazz. Flutist Linda Jozefowski leads a quartet with an interesting sound palette - the expected piano is replaced by a vibraphone (Jean-Lou Treboux). The compositions could evoke Moe Kofmann, but Jozefowski’s playing is more fluid and nuanced than the old Canadian master.

BRUCE FRIEDMAN & MOTOKO HONDA / Edge Study (Analog Arts)

Un disque étonnant, où le trompettiste Bruce Friedman explore une forme longue d’improvisation minimaliste avec Motoko Honda au synthétiseur. De longues notes de trompette accompagnées de longs sons de synthétiseur, très discrets dans les deux cas, entre une mélodie qui ne coalesce pas et une texture qui laisse incertaine. En marge, comme l’indique le titre. Et pourtant beau et berçant. Surprenant.

A surprising record where trumpeter Bruce Friedman explores long-form minimalist improvisation with Motoko Honda on synthesizer. Long trumpet notes accompanied by long synthesizer sounds, both quiet, halfway between a melody that won’t coalesce and an uncertain tecture. On the edge indeed. And yet pretty and lulling.

BARREL / Gratuitous Abuse (Emanem)

Barrel est un trio à cordes londonien composé d’Alison Blunt (biolon), Ivor Kallin (violon, alto) et Hannah Marshall (violoncelle). Ce premier disque les place dans la veine du Quatuor Accorde et de l’alignement d’Iskra 1903 qui incluait Philipp Wachsmann. Des improvisations moins minimalistes que celles d’Ernesto et Guilherme Rodrigues, tout en demeurant non-idiomatiques et essentiellement texturales. Quelques moments solides, mais je ne suis pas particulièrment impressionné dans l’ensemble.

Barrel is a London-based free improvising string trio consisting of Alison Blunt (violin), Ivor Kallin (violin, viola), and Hannah Marshall (cello). This debut album puts them in line with Quatuor Accorde and the Iskra 1903 line-up that included Philipp Wachsmann. Their approach to free improvisation is less minimalistic and quiet than Ernesto & Guilherme Rodrigues’, while remaining non-idiomatic and basically textural. Some strong passages, but I’m not particularly impressed overall.
