GREGOR FREI’s ASMIN / Roots of a Weightless Soul (Unit Records)

Le saxophoniste Gregor Frei propose ici un sextette de jazz presque doucereux, avec une ligne de cuivres (+ Tobias Meier au saxo et Silvio Cadosch au trombone), guitare, basse et batterie. La présence de la chanteuse Marena Whitcher sur trois des treize titres égaie ce disque plutôt monochrome.

Saxophonist Gregor Frei proposes here a sextet of rather soft jazz, with a brass line (+ Tobias Meier on sax and Silvio Cadosh on trombone), guitar, bass, and drumkit. Singer Marena Whitcher’s appearance on three of the thirteen tracks brings some colour to this monochromous set.

RICH HALLEY QUARTET / Requiem for a Pit Viper (Pine Eagle Records)

Un disque amusant et fort en testostérone, Requiem for a Pit Viper place le saxo Rich Halley dans un quatuor à deux cuivres, l’autre étant le trombone de Michael Vlatkovitch. Dix pièces assez courtes, souvent punchées, avec du corps, une section rythmique fluide mais bien ancrée et des échanges animés.

A fun record with a level of testosteron. Requiem for a Pit Viper features saxman Rich Halley in a double-horn quartet lineup – the other horn being Michael Vlatkovitch’s trombone. Ten rather short, punchy, full-bodied tracks, with a fluid yet sure-footed rhythm section and vivid exchanges.

ANTON & THE HEADCLEANERS / Rotor (Unit Records)

Après un premier album en 1998, le groupe du guitariste suisse Anton Brüschweiler revient à la charge. Rotor tape fort dans le jazz-rock actuel métissé (de métal, d’impro libre, etc.). Andreas Schaerer (de Hildegard lernt fliegen) fait une apparition remarquable sur “Immortal”.

After a debut album in 1998, Swiss guitarist Anton Brüschweiler’s band is back. Rotor hits hard in a creative jazz-rock style crossbred with metal, free improvisation, etc. Hildegard lernt fliegen’s Andreas Schaerer makes a remarkable guest appearance on “Immortal.”

LEYLAND KIRBY / Eager to Tear Apart the Stars (History Always Favours the Winners - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)

Ce disque de Leyland Kirby (aka The Caretaker) fait suit au long triple album Sadly, the Future is No Longer What It Was. Il demeure dans la même veine ambiante/introspective/quasi-nouvel-âge-sauf-que. Parce qu’on y trouve des bribes expérimentales, subtiles et intelligemment tissées dans l’ensemble. Ce nouvel opus est moins déprimant que le précédent, malgré ce qu’en laissent croire des titres comme “To Reject the World” ou “They Are All Dead, There Are No Skip At All”.

This record from Leyland Kirby (aka The Caretaker) is the follow-up to his looong triple set Sadly, The Future is No Longer What It Was. It sticks to the same direction: ambient/introspective/almost-new-age-except-for-the-fact. The fact that it also has subtle and intelligent elements of experimentation and forward-thinking embedded in it. This new opus is somewhat less of a downer than the previous album, despite what titles like “To Reject the World” and “They Are All Dead, There Are No Skip At All” may indicate.
