ESMERINE / La Lechuza (Constellation Records)
Un splendide album mélancolique signé Rebecca Foon, Bruce Cawdron, Sarah Pagé et Andrew Barr, avec la participation de Patrick Watson à plusieurs niveaux (enregistrement, mixage et même du chant sur trois pièces). Au fil de douces compositions hors du temps et des styles, on rend hommage à la regrettée Lhasa de Sela, à travers une chanson qui lui est dédiée (“Snow Day for Lhasa”) et une autre où elle chante (une version inédite de sa chanson “Fish on Land”). Certains arrangements rappellent le groupe Fifths of Sevens et l’ensemble de l’album est fermement ancré dans l’émotivité feutrée des projets de l’écurie Constellation. A wonderful album of melancholia from Rebecca Foon, Bruce Cawdron, Sarah Pagé and Andrew Barr, with involvement from Patrick Watson at many levels (recording, mixing, even vocals on three tracks). In the course of quiet compositions out of time and styles, the band pays tribute to the late Lhasa de Sela, to whom one song is dedicated (“Snow Day for Lhasa”) and who actually sings on another (a previously unreleased version of her own “Fish on Land”). Some arrangements bring to mind Fifths of Sevens, and the album as a whole is firmly anchored in the velvety emotivity characterizing Constellation’s roster. [Below: Stream the whole album.]
COLIN STETSON / New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges (Constellation Records)
Je n’ai pas entendu le volume 1, mais ce volume 2 est très solide. Le saxophoniste montréalais Colin Stetson a développé une impressionnante technique de respiration continue et l’utilise pour créer l’illusion de boucles sonores (un rendu très différent de celui d’Evan Parker, par exemple). Sur ce disque de compositions, il combine son saxo (toujours en prise de son unique) aux voix de Laurie Anderson (qui récite) et de Shara Worden (qui chante). Produit par Shahzad Ismaily, qui donne au tout des crocs et un air rebelle.
I haven’t heard Volume 1, but this volume 2 is pretty strong. Montreal saxman Colin Stetson has developed an impressive circular breathing technique and uses it to create the illusion of loops (an application much different than Evan Parker’s). On this album of compositions, he pairs his sax (always single first takes) with the voices of Laurie Anderson (reciting) and Shara Worden (singing). Produced by Shahzad Ismaily who gives the music sharp teeth and a rebellous attitude.
MATANA ROBERTS / Coin Coin, Chapter One: Gens de couleur libres (Constellation Records)
Un projet de grand ensemble signée Matana Roberts. La saxophoniste est entourée de la chanteuse Gitanjali Jain et de 14 musiciens montréalais, dont Nicolas Caloia, Josh Zubot et Thierry Amar. Un projet jazz qui frôle parfois le gospel et revisite des chants et musiques traditionnels afro-américains. Créatif, poignant, riche en moments musicaux forts (et plus souvent dans les arrangements que dans les solos).
A large ensemble project by Matana Roberts. The saxophonist is accompanied by singer Gitanjali Jain and a 14-piece big band of Montrealers (among them: Nicolas Caloia, Josh Zubot and Thierry Amar. A jazz project bordering on gospel, where Roberts revisits traditional Afro-American songs and tunes. Creative, moving, and rich in musical highlights (many of which are found in the arrangements).
