HARLEY GABER / In Memoriam 2010 (Innova)
Pour faire suite à l’album I Saw My Mother Ascending Mount Fuji à la mémoire de sa mère, voici que Harley Gaber publie chez Innova une autre œuvre composée en guise d’hommage posthume. Cette fois, par contre, il s’agit d’une commande. Néanmoins, les deux pièces partagent le même genre d’univers électronique post-apocalyptique, fait de grands espaces aux résonances angoissantes et aux harmoniques fantômatiques. Les six movements de cette heure de musique varient peu et très subtilement. Pourtant, ils développent tout de même un matériau mélodique qu’il faut savoir percevoir.
As the follow-up to I Saw My Mother Ascending Mount Fujii dedicated to his mother, Harley Gaber just released on Innova another work written in memoriam. This time, though, it was commissioned. Still, both works share the same kind of post-apocalyptic electronic soundscape maide of wide spaces with anguishing resonances and ghostly harmonics. The six movements of this hour-long work vary little and in very subtle ways. Yet, they do develop melodic materials, though you have to learn to perceive them.

Un quatuor de rock actuel new-yorkais constitué du batteur Andrew Becker, du chanteur Breck Brunson, du claviériste Roland Tierney et du guitariste Luke Kozikowski. L’album est produit par Eldridge Skell (du groupe The Rude Staircase). Des pièces courtes aux accents no-wave ET psychédéliques (mélange inhabituel), avec des rythmes puissants, des ambiances tordues, des paroles difficiles à saisir (y en a-t-il?), chantées par une voix qui rappelle celle de Randall Frazier (Orbit Service). J’aime, surtout à cause de la filiation évidente (dans la palette sonore et certains arrangements) avec The Rude Staircase et Condor Moments, deux groupes de l’écurie What Delicate. An avant-rock quartet from New York with drummer Andrew Becker, singer Breck Brunson, keyboardist Roland Tierney and guitarist Luke Kozikowski. The album is produced by Eldridge Skell (of The Rude Staircase). Short tracks with no-wave AND psychedelic leanings (an unusual mix), powerful beats, twisted ambiences, vocals hard to grasp (are these lyrics?) sung by a voice reminiscent of Orbit Service’s Randall Frazier. I like, mostly because of the obvious filiation (in sound palette and some arrangements) with The Rude Staircase and Condor Moments, two What Delicate bands. Released as an LP.
