MARTINE ALTENBURGER, FRÉDÉRIC BLONDY & BERTRAND GAUGUET / Vers l’île paresseuse (Creative Sources)
Allons droit au but: Vers l’île paresseuse compte parmi les meilleures productions de Creative Sources. Cette session parisienne remontant à janvier 2009 est simplement délicieuse.Le pianiste Frédéric Blondy et le saxo Bertrand Gauguet ont déjà travaillé ensemble et partagent une chimie subtile. La violoncelliste Martine Altenburger s’insère entre eux avec beaucoup d’intelligence et de senti. La session d’une heure se divise en cinq improvisations libres aux gestes parcimonieux et mesurés autant avec la tête qu’avec le cœur. On le sait: ce genre de projet d’improvisation passe ou casse en fonction de règles tenant plus du hasard des dispositions de chacun (certains diraient de la magie). Eh bien la magie opère sur ce superbe disque.
Let’s get to the point: Vers l’île paresseuse (“Toward the lazy island”) is one of Creative Sources’ finest productions. This Paris session from January 2009 is simply gorgeous. Pianist Frédéric Blondy and saxophonist Bertrand Gauguet have worked together previously and share a subtle form of chemistry. Cellist Martine Altenburger wedges herself between them with a high level of intelligence and feeling. The one-hour session consists of five free improvisations made of careful actions measured as much with the head than with the heart. You know it: this kind of improvisation project succeeds or fails following rules that depend more on the disposition of everyone involved – some called it magic. Well, the magic sure works on this superb album.
ERIC HOFBAUER AND THE INFRARED BAND / Level (Creative Nation Music/Notable - merci à/thanks to Improvised Communications)
Première fois que j’entends ce groupe du guitariste Eric Hofbauer. Un projet très jazz, un quartet avec le saxo ténor Kelly Roberge et une section rythmique. Toutes des compos de Hofbauer, qui a la plume alerte et un bon sens de l’innovation dans la tradition. L’album joue beaucoup sur les concepts de confrontation et de compétition, du moins sur papier. Musicalement, ça s’entend moins. En fait, autant les albums solos de Hofbauer me plaisent beaucoup (ils ont une étincelle), autant ce disque me paraît banal.
First time I hear this particular group led by guitarist Eric Hofbauer. A jazzy-jazz quartet with tenor sax Kelly Roberge and a rhythm section. All compositions by Hofbauer, who has a vivid pen and a good sense of innovation within tradition. The album revolves around notions of confrontation and competition, at least on paper. This dimension is less palpable in the music itself. In fact, although I’m fond of Hofbauer’s solo albums (they have a spark), I find this CD a bit trite.
XL TARGET with KJ DAVE DORAN & CHRISTY DORAN / NuBtz ReMix (Unit Records)
Un jazz fusion électro très groovy. Le batteur Dave Doran fait ample usage d’échantillons et de programmation. Le guitariste Christy Doran déploie son habituelle palette d’effets, mais surtout sa virtuosité. Ce disque en met plein la vue - les détracteurs du genre fusion renacleront - tout en atteignant un bon équilibre entre rythmes et flips. À rapprocher du dernier Brink Man Ship.
Ultra groovy electro-jazz fusion. Drummer Dave Doran uses plenty of samples and programs. Guitarist Christy Doran unleashes his usual palette of effects, but mostly his virtuosity. This record is very much in your face - detractors of the fusion genre will be pissed - but it also strikes a nice balance between beats and flips. Offers a nice companion to the latest Brink Man Ship CD.
OCTOBER EQUUS / Saturnal (altrOck)
Un groupe espagnol qui propose un solide rock progressif d’avant-garde inspiré de Henry Cow et de Motor Totemist Guild. Des pièces courtes mais très développées interprétées par un septette (guitare, claviers, basse, saxo/flûte, saxo, violoncelle et batterie). Un son de groupe bien mûri - depuis quand sont-ils ensemble? Chaudement recommandé. Et le livret offre plusieurs œuvres picturales frappantes.
A Spanish group offering a strong brand of avant-prog showing similarities with Henry Cow and Motor Totemist Guild. Short ultra-developed tracks performed by a septet (guitar, keyboards, bass, sax/flute, sax, cello, drums). A well-honed group sound – how long have they been together? Heartily recommended. And the booklet includes several striking pieces of artwork.
