DADAVISTIC ORCHESTRA / Dokument .02 (Dust Science - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)
A second album for Dadavistic Orchestra, a collaboration between The Black Dog and three ex-Psychick Warriors Ov Gaia. Six 10-minute tracks, all ultra-ambient electronica of the minimal/textural persuasion. Similar to the soundworlds of labels like 12k and Room40. Except that Dokument .02 goes by unnoticed. It lacks character.

Under a wallet-sized black and white cardboard sleeve hides a 35-minute accordion solo strongly reminiscent of Alfredo Costa Monteiro’s work, i.e. a total deconstruction of the playing and role of the accordion. The instrument is torn down to a breath and clicks (I’m barely exaggerating). And lots of silence and mute concentration. A demanding but surprisingly taking listen. Bold and convincing.

O BANDO / O Bando (Shadoks Music - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)
O Bando from Sao Paulo, Brazil, made only one LP, O Bando, released in 1969. Shadoks Music has just released the first official and authorized reissue of this nugget. Very good tropical psychedelic pop. Less psychedelic than Os Mutantes, but better produced than most of its contemporaries. What makes O Bando so interesting in hindsight is the strong brass arrangements and the cheerfulness of what is basically an expression of dissent.

TRÚBROT / Undir Áhrifum (Shadoks Music - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)
Released the year after Trúbrot, Undir Áhrifum continues with this Icelandic band’s unique blending of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s country rock and The Nice’s progressive rock. Female singer Shady Owens is now out, but nothing’s lost. The compositions have grown more ambitious and the performances are stronger. “Going”, “Sunbath” and “Feel Me” (10 minutes) are the highlights on a record signaling a substantial evolution in the band’s sound. I’m eagerly awaiting the last two Trúbrot albums soon to be reissued by Shadoks.

COMUS / East of Sweden: Live at the Melloboat Festival 2008 (Gnostic Dirt - merci à/thanks to Forced Exposure)
Still, quite an event: in Sweden, March 2008, British progressive folk band Comus walked on stage for the first time in 34 years. With the “classical” line-up of the First Utterance LP minus Rob Young who declined the invitation. This CD features a 45-minute set plus an encore reprising the opener “Song to Comus.” Here’s another event: this is my first exposure to Comus’ repertoire. And I am won over. Because, beyond Roger Wootton’s (occasionally) off-key vocals and less-than-perfect ensemble playing, I can easily hear the finesse in the songwriting. It’s clear: I need the original recordings! A small disappointment: the shortness of the concert. A joy: the inclusion of a cover of “Venus in Furs.” A jubilation: hearing for the first time (in my personal case) the songs “Diana”, “Drip Drip” and “Song to Comus.” If anybody out there is keeping count, please add 1 to the number of converts.
