Cinquième album du groupe britannique de jazz-rock-punk actuel Led Bib, et leur deuxième pour l’étiquette américaine Cuneiform. Bring Your Own est le digne successeur de Sensible Shoes: des lignes méodiques jazzés-punkés, des arrangements rappelant les groupes plus bruyants de John Zorn, un clair et réel plaisir de jouer. Le métissage se poursuit. “Moth Dilemma” et “Power Walking” tapent fort et ferme. En fait, seule “Is That a Woodblock?” s’égare dans les méandres d’une improvisation faiblarde – même “Winter”, après un solo de saxo sans couleur, se remet vite sur pied pour une finale canon. Pour le reste, les thèmes sont concis, l’humour présent et le plaisir durable.
The fifth album from British jazz-rock-punk group Led Bib, and their second opus for US label Cuneiform. Bring Your Own is the proud follow-up to Sensible Shoes: jazzy-punkish heads, arrangements reminiscent of John Zorn’s louder bands, the clear and palpable joy of playing. The cross-breeding continues. “Moth Dilemma” and “Power Walking” hit hard and strong. Actually, only “Is That a Woodblock?” looses its way amid a weak improvisation – even “Winter,” after a half-hearted sax solo, manages to pick itself up and finish with a flourish. Elsewhere, it’s all concise themes, humour, and durable enjoyment.
Tiens donc, bien que Bring Your Own (ci-dessus) soit solide, il m’a un peu moins accroché que le précédent Led Bib, alors que je trouve instantanément ce nouveau Gutbucket meilleur que A Modest Proposal, leur premier disque pour Cuneiform. Ce quatuor new-yorkais tape fort dans le jazz-rock lui aussi, sans le côté anarchique de Led Bib et avec un quelque chose de plus pesant et, simultanément, de plus avant-prog. J’entends dans Flock Kayo Dot et Time of Orchids, mais aussi Ruins et Boom. Sur cet album, l’écriture (tous les membres composent) est à la fois plus efficace et moins formulée. “Fuck You and Your Hipster Tie” et “Zero is Short for Idiot” soulignent bien cette différence par rapport au disque précédent, mais c’est la “Born Again Atheist Suite” en trois parties qui donne la pleine mesure du talent de ce groupe. Funny. Though Bring Your Own (see above) is a strong release, it grabbed me less strongly on first listen than the previous Led Bib, while I instantly find this new Gutbucket better than their previous Cuneiform release A Modest Proposal. This New York quartet also hits hard jazz-rock style, although without Led Bib’s anarchic leanings and with a heavier edge and more of an avant-prog stance. I’m hearing Kayo Dot and Time of Orchids in Flock, but also Ruins and Boom. On this album, the songwriting (all members compose) is both more efficient and less formulaic. “Fuck You and Your Hipster Tie” and “Zero is Short for Idiot” highlight the difference between this and the previous release, but the piece that delivers the band’s full range of talent is the three-part “Born Again Atheist Suite.” Heartily recommended to fans of Forever Einstein… and why not, Kayo Dot too.
