J’avais bien aimé Transcendence in the Age of War, le disque précédent chez Navona du compositeur John Carollo. Celui-ci n’est pas aussi frappant, mais tout de même une belle écoute. Il réunit deux pièces pour orchestre à cordes qui ouvrent et concluent l’album. Entre elles, on trouve une solide pièce pour orchestre, un quatuor pour violon, violoncelle, piano et clarinette intitulé “A Worded Grey Enigma”, un quatuor de saxophones et une version pour ensemble à vent de “Transcendence in the Age of War.” La force de Carollo est double: un mélodisme simple mais inusité et un grand talent pour les textures orchestrales. C’est donc les pièces pour ensemble à cordes qui sont les plus réussies.

I really liked Transcendence in the Age of War, composer John Carollo’s previous CD for Navona Records. This one is not as enthralling, but it provides a fine listen. This album features two string orchestra pieces bookending the playlist. In-between, it culls a strong work for orchestra, a quartet for violin, cello, piano and clarinet entitled “A Worded Grey Enigma,” a sax quartet, and a version of “Transcendence in the Age of War” for concert band. Carollo posesses two strenghts: a simply yet unique melodicism, and a knack for orchestral textures. The string orchestra pieces are the most artistically successful ones in this set.

Un groupe de free jazz néerlandais, avec le pianiste Nico Huijbregts, un saxo, une basse et une batterie. Une session vive qui rappelle certains groupements de Peter Brötzmann dans les années 70. Belle énergie, belle connivence. Et une pochette sur le même modèle inusité que celles de Brombron.

A Dutch free jazz band featuring pianist Nico Huijbregts, a sax, a bass and a drum kit. A lively session reminiscent of some of Peter Brötzmann’s groups. Nice energy, nice interplay. And the CD sleeve follows the unique model used by Brombron.

I COMPANI / Mangiare! (ind. - merci à/thanks to Toondist)

Pour souligner son 25e anniversaire, l’ensemble de jazz néerlandais I Compani présente Mangiare!, un album en concert. La manière d’I Compani change peu depuis quelques années et consiste en un mélange de tango, de musique foraine et de free jazz. À une certaine époque c’était novateur, mais aujourd’hui ça sonne de plus en plus comme un produit bon chic bon genre pour auditeurs bien-pensants se croyant audacieux. Cela dit, il s’agit d’un ensemble solide à la musique colorée… mais devenue prévisible.

To celebrate its 25^th anniversary, Dutch jazz ensemble I Compani presents Mangiare!, a live album. I Compani’s approach has changed little in the last few years. It consists in a blend of tango, circus music and free jazz. It once was innovative, but nowadays it sounds increasingly like the acceptable take on the avant-garde for chic people who think of themselves as “bold.” That being said, I Compani remains a strong ensemble playing colourful music…the music has simple grown too predictable.
