NEIL ROLNICK / Extended Family (Innova)

Je m’entiche de Neil Rolnick avec le temps. Extended Family suit (relativement) rapidement après The Economic Engine et propose trois œuvres très différentes entre elles mais partageant un lien à l’intime. “Extended Family” utilise l’image de la famille étendue pour développer en cinq mouvements des associations d’idées musicales pour le quatuor à cordes ETHEL (le même qui a créé sur disque l’excellent Dream House de Mary Ellen Childs). C’est intelligent et gracieux. “Faith” est une longue composition pour piano et ordinateur commandée par le pianiste Bob Gluck, ex-rabbin. Elle confie certains passages à l’interprète qui doit improviser, exprimant ainsi la foi du compositeur en l’humain. Enfin, dans “MONO Prelude”, Rolnick raconte dans un monologue presque digne de Woody Allen (en fait un dialogue avec la bande informatisée) sa perte d’une oreille. Rolnick fait de jolies trouvailles dans cette dernière pièce, mais celle-ci n’arrive pas à transcender son aspect anecdotique. Par contre, les deux autres œuvres méritent votre attention.

I’m liking Neil Rolnick more and more with time. Extended Family follows up (relatively) quickly on The Economic Engine, turning in three works that differ greatly from one another, yet share a thematic unity: the composer’s personal life. “Extended Family” uses family as a metaphor to develop five movements of musical thought associations for string quartet ETHEL (who gave us the first recording of Mary Ellen Childs’ excellent “Dream House”). The composition is intelligent and graceful. “Faith” is a long piece for piano and computer commissioned by pianist and ex-rabbi Bob Gluck. The performer is entrusted with a few passages where he must improvise, and this device expresses the composer’s faith in human beings. Finally, in “MONO Prelude,” Rolnick goes into a Woody Allen-esque monologue (actually a dialogue with the computer part) about his losing an ear. Rolnick makes a few interesting discoveries, but the piece never quite transcends its anecdotal aspect. However, the other two works sure deserve your attention.

Court mais très bon et efficace. Graham Reynolds (du Golden Arm Trio) propose une composition pour ensemble à cordes, 20 minutes, 5 mouvements, autour de l’invention (non réalisée) de Charles Babbage. Rythmique, métrique, “catchy” - un crossover entre musique contemporaine et musique populaire. Puis, chaque mouvement est repris par un remixeur, dont Reynolds lui-même et DJ Spooky. Et pour une fois, ces remixes ajoutent à l’œuvre, en peaufinant son aspect crossover et sa réflexion sur la machine à penser - l’ordinateur - envisagée par Babbage.  [Ci-dessous: Le 3e mouvement, trouvé sur le site du compositeur.]

Short but good and effective. Graham Reynolds (of the Golden Arm Trio) presents a 20-minute, 5-movement composition for string ensemble based on the (unrealized) title invention by Charles Babbage. Rhythmical, metrical, catchy - a crossover between contemporary and pop music. Then, each movement is reprised by a remix artists, among whom Reynolds himself and DJ Spooky. And for once, the remixes actually contribute something to the work, perfecting its crossover aspect and its reflection on the thinking machine (the computer) envisioned by Babbage.  [Below: “Movement III,” found on the composer’s website.]

POOJA GOSWAMI PAVAN / How Shall I Say? (Innova)

Hmm... Cette parution chez Innova me rend confus. Innova fait essentiellement dans la musique contemporaine, en se permettant de nombreuses incartades. Mais cette incartade-ci est plus grande que d’habitude. Il s’agit de musique classique indienne - très jolie, paisible, monotone aussi, chantée par la docteure Pooja Goswami Pavan. Je manque de référents pour juger de la démarche artistique, cet univers m’étant largement inconnu - mais il me semble qu’on ne réinvente pas la roue en quoi que ce soit. Au menu: tabla, harmonium, sarangi et tampura, mais surtout la très belle voix de Pavan, sur sept pièces d’une dizaine de minutes chacune.

Hmm... This Innova release has me confused. Innova is basically a contemporary music label, although it regularly allows itself a step aside. But this particularly step aside is larger than usual. This is Indian classical music - pretty, peaceful, monotonous, sung by Dr. Pooja Goswami Pavan. I lack background to evaluate the artistic process, as this universe is largely unknown to me, but it seems to me that nothing gets reinvented here. This CD features tabla, harmonium, sarangi and tampura, but mostly the Pavan’s beautiful voice on seven 10-minute tracks.
