ARTISTES VARIÉS-VARIOUS ARTISTS / Cache 2009 CA+DE (Productions électro Productions)
The 2009 edition of the Canadian Electroacoustic Community’s Jeu de temps/Time’s Play competition included a German section in association with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Electroakustische Musik. Consequently, the Cache 2009 compilation (which culls the finalists’ submissions) is a double album, one CD featuring the Canadian participants, the German ones being included on disc 2. It’s no patriotism on my part, but I feel like the Canadian selection is clearly superior. “Syncrétisme” by Guillaume Barrette, “Manège I” by Félix Lachance and “Frette” by Charles Quevillon stand out for the overall quality of the composition and their strand of humour. However, I was expecting more from Olivier Girouard’s “Suite_04”, rather long and monotonous. On the German side, I prefer “Vertikalzeit” by Nicolas Wiese. Overall, Cache 2009 is a very fine vintage, stronger than the 2007 or 2008 crops.

BRUCE ARNOLD & JOHN STOWELL / Sonic Infestation (Muse Eek)
A fine album of treated guitars. Following a studio improvisation session with John Stowell, Bruce Arnold used the tapes and coaxed out of them 11 short tracks, through creative editing, treatment and recomposition. These guitar redesigned guitar duos range from pastorales (the disc’s intro and outro) to faux-gamelan prepared guitar pieces (“Simultaneous Vector”), by way of more abstract things, though always easy to listen to and get into. Nice concise work.  [Below: The album’s opening track.]

BRUCE ARNOLD, VICENT COLONQUES & AVEINO SAAVEDRA / Valencia: 3 (Muse Eek)
Now, this one is a lot less interesting than Sonic Infestation. A free rock trio with a guitar put through SuperCollider (Arnold), piano (Colonques) and drums (Saavedra). Long, monotonous, with a lack of listening between the musicians - it never truly takes off.
