ALEXEI LAPIN / Parallels (Leo Records)
Russian pianist Alexei Lapin is one of Leo Records’ latest finds. Parallels is his debut solo release, following a duo with Vlady Bystrov, a quartet with Gratkowsi, Gramss and Bledsoe, and a participation to a record by Lena Sedykh. This solo is long, often very delicate, and a little cold in the execution. I’m not hooked. I acknowledge the talent, the mastery, the ideas, but it lacks the spark that would distinguish Lapin from other European pianists/improvisers (and he sounds very European). I’m slightly disappointed.

JOËLLE LÉANDRE / Live at the Ulrichsberg Kaleidophon (Leo Records)
A double album featuring two totally different projects presented in Ulrichsberg on two consecutive days. First up is a 54-minute work composed for an eclectic tentet including, among others, Boris Hauf, Burkhard Stangl and Kevin Norton. Then, a free improvisation trio with Léandre, Norton and John Tilbury. The tentet is a surprise: fresh, lively – a side of Léandre I really didn’t know, where John Cage meets Frank Zappa. Angular yet melodic writing, with complex arborescences that lesave room to improvisation. The trio feels less interesting - the match between Léandre and Tilbury (yes, AMM’s pianist) sounds circumstancial, enjoyable but that’s all. That said, the tentet recording prevails and justifies caughing up the dough for this double set.

?ALOS / Yomi: L’Oscura terra dei morti (Bar La Muerte)
Stefania Pedretti (aka ?Alos, also in Allun and OvO) released an EP on vinyl where she unleashes her haunting voice through screams, grunts and atavistic laments over disquieting musical backgrounds blending post-industrial electronica and Svarte Greiner-like drones. The long track “Panas” is remixed by Makoto Kawabata (Acid Mothers Temple) and expands a lot between my loudspeakers. Uncomfortable yet interesting listen - and a lot more convincing than my previous encounter with ?Alos.

IGOR KRUTOGOLOV - ASSIF TSAHAR - HAGAI FERSHTMAN / Exhaust (Auris Media)
A short yet powerful live improvisation session between three “loud mouths”: bassist Igor Krutogolov (Kruzenshtern i Parohod, Mitch & Krutogolov & Mitch), saxman Assif Tsahar, and drumer Hagai Fershtman. Four avant-rock improvs evoking Moonchild as seen by Ruins and The Melvins. And if you like this, do know that Krutogolov and Tsahar have done a similar session with Yoshida Tatsuya a couple of years ago.
