PAUL HUBWEBER & PHILIP ZOUBEK / Archiduc Concert: Dansaert Variations (Emanem)
Un beau duo d’improvisation libre trombone/piano préparé enregistré à l’Archiduc (Bruxelles) en novembre 2007. Belle complicité, techniques inventives, créativité soutenue. “Mean Machine” (25 minutes) vaut le détour à elle seule.
A fine free improvisation duo, trombone and piano, recorded at L’Archiduc (Brussels) in November 2007. Nice interactions, innovative techniques, unfailing creativity. “Mean Machine” (25 minutes) is worth the price of admission.
CHARLOTTE HUG & FRED LONBERG-HOLM / Fine Extensions (Emanem)
Je suis complètement séduit par ce disque. Voilà une paire d’improvisateurs faits l’un pour l’autre. L’alto de Hug, souvent chuintant ou chantant d’un chant amer, se combine merveilleusement au son plus carré de Lonberg-Holm. Ces deux-là réussissent une brillante quadrature du cercle. Un concert enregistré en mars 2009. Du bonbon pour l’amateur de musique improvisée.
I am totally seduced by this record. Here’s a well assorted pair of improvisers. Hug’s viola, often whining, swishing, or singing a bitter song, fits perfectly with Lonberg-Holm’s squarer sound. These two make a brilliant unlikely pair. A live recording from March 2009. A treat for free improvisation fans.
STUDER-FREY / Zwei (Unit Records)
Un duo de contrebasses, avec Daniel Studer et Peter K. Frey. Ce duo existe depuis dix ans. Belle recherche texturale, quelques moments de pure beauté. Plus accompli que leur premier album, Zweierlei (2006).
A doublebass duo featuring Daniel Studer and Peter K. Frey. They have been going at it together for ten years. Nice textural experimentations, a handful of moments of pure beauty. More accomplished than their first opus Zweierlei (2006).
CLAUDIO PUNTIN & LUCERNE JAZZ ORCHESTRA / Berge Versetzen (Unit Records)
Le clarinettiste Claudio Puntin s’allie au Lucerne Jazz Orchestra pour présenter une suite pour clarinette voix et orchestre jazz dédiée à la Suisse. Il y a un peu de tout ici: du comique et du lyrique, du joli et du pimpant. On remarque des influences de Duke Ellington, de Mike Westbrook, voire de la Fanfare Pourpour et de Robert Wyatt. C’est parfois douceret, ce qui m’embête un peu.
Clarinetist Claudio Puntin teams up with the Lucerne Jazz Orchestra for a suite for clarinet, voice and jazz orchestra about Switzerland. There’s a little of everything here: comedy, lyricism, prettiness, joyfulness. I hear shards of Duke Ellington, Mike Westbrook, even some Fanfare Pourpour and Robert Wyatt. It occasionally gets a bit too sweet, which bothers me some.
TU M’ / Pink Shark (Phtalo Records)
Un vieux disque (de 2004), à une époque ou Tu M’ était encore un trio (je crois) et faisait encore dans la glitch électronica tordue. Je préfère leur manière douce, plus ambiante et minimaliste (One More Night, ou même leur EP pour Crónica), mais le groupe se tirait très bien d’affaire dans cette époque maximaliste. Très rythmé aussi. Et ça vieillit plutôt bien.
An old record (from 2004), back when Tu M’ was still a trio (I think) and was still playing twisted glitch electronica. I prefer their softer ways, their more ambient and minimal music (One More Night, or even their Crónica EP), but the band used to pull off the maximalist shtick very well. Beat-driven too. And it ages well.
