STIAN WESTERHUS / Pitch Black Star Spangled (Rune Grammofon)

Ceci est le deuxième album solo du guitariste norvégien Stian Westerhus (Monolithic, Puma) chez Rune Grammofon, après le vinyle Galore (que j’ai manqué). Splendide album de solos recherchés et expérimentaux, du travail de textures et de timbres, des pièces généralement calmes et posées comme celles d’Oren Ambarchi, mais belles d’une beauté fragile rappellant Loren Connors. Un talent qui s’impose doucement, sans prétention.

This is Monolithic/Puma guitarist Stian Westerhus’ second solo album for Rune Grammofon, after the LP-only release Galore (which I missed). A splendid album of sophisticated and experimental solos, fine work on textures and tones, generally calm and poised pieces akin to Oren Ambarchi’s, but of a fragile beauty reminiscent of Loren Connors. This talent imposes itself softly, without pretense.

Dans les années 50 et 60, cette vieille dame était la pire chanteuse au monde... et a fait une courte carrière dans les variétés en tablant sur ce titre! Johnny Trunk, remasteriseur d’étrangetés indicibles, nous permet de découvrir son seul long-jeu, Music To Suffer By (1958). Vous ne le croirez pas: douze chansons, certaines originales, où Leona chante (faux), raconte (d’une voix rapeuse), yodelle (tout croche) et séduit (aussi bien qu’un bloc de fromage bleu), sur fond d’accompagnement orchestral. C’est douloureux et hilarant. On croirait les Monty Pythons! “Rats in My Room” et “Limburger Lover” sont à apprendre par coeur pour chanter en coeur avec tous vos amis! (Oui, j’aime ce genre de choses, c’est fabuleusement psychotronique à sa manière.) [Ci-dessous: “Rats in My Room”, mais attention, il s’agit de l’original repiqué d’un vinyle. La réédition chez Trunk est remasterisée.]

In the ‘50s and ‘60s, this old lady was said to be the worst singer in the world… and she actually made a (short) career in entertainment on that title! Johnny Trunk, master remasterer of untold oddities, allows us to discover her sole LP, Music To Suffer By (1958). You won’t believe your ears: twelve songs, some of them originals I believe, where Leona sings (out of tune), tells (in a raspy voice), yodels (all over the place) and croons (as well as a chunk of blue cheese), over orchestra accompaniment! It’s painful and hilarious. Add ten years or so and it could have been the Monty Pythons! “Rats in My Room” and “Limburger Lover” are worth learning by heart to sing along with your friends!
